Hip-hop crew seeks inner peace — and massive jams

Despite what you hear on the radio, true hip-hop isn’t about Escalades, VIP rooms, or “Superman[ing] that ho.” In fact, local dance troupe Foot Klan equates hip-hop with “higher inner peace helping other people.” Representing the local scene since the early ’90s, the Klan’s goal is to enrich the community by creating a safe and peaceful environment for people to connect and share their love of hip-hop culture. One of the best examples takes place each Wednesday, when Foot Klan opens its practice space to the public for Underground Hotspot. The all-ages night features dancing, DJ battles, spoken-word competitions, and former Phoenix Sun Cedric Ceballos spinning the wheels of steel.
