Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl raises the bar on Kurt Cobain

From this week's proceedings in the Court of Public Opinion, Case #89675-B: The People vs. Dave Grohl.

"The defense may now present its closing arguments."

"Thank you, your honor. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: As you know, my client, David Eric Grohl, leader of the band Foo Fighters, has been accused of voluntary earslaughter. With only the flimsiest of evidence — an accessible, mainstream pop-rock song here and there; chart-topping albums and millions in record sales; the occasional lighthearted, comedic video — the prosecution has characterized him as a modern-rock musical midget. You've heard him smeared as a hack and slandered as the owner of a back catalog of many dozens of mediocre, forgettable, and in some cases, 'absolutely awful' songs. And, most damning of all, you've heard suggestions that talent-wise, he is nowhere even close to his late Nirvana bandmate, Kurt Cobain — a man repeatedly referred to in these proceedings as 'god-like,' or simply, 'God.'

Is Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl as much a genius as the late Kurt Cobain?

"Ladies and gentlemen, not only is my client innocent of these scurrilous charges and claims, but I am here to tell you that he should be held in higher esteem than Mr. Cobain."

[A collective gasp comes from the gallery.]

"First of all, there is my client's longevity. Foo Fighters have been a band for 13 years, which is exactly twice as long as Nirvana was around. There is something to be said for sticking around, as my client himself once put it, in the face of the music industry's ups and downs. You might argue that, like a baseball player who hangs around long after his prime to amass 3,000 hits, longevity is irrelevant, but my client has performed at a consistently high level, both in the studio and onstage, for the entirety of his career.

"Furthermore, conventional wisdom suggests that had Mr. Cobain still been alive all these years, he would have amassed a stupendous body of work. However, based on statistics I have compiled from the history of rock 'n' roll, I have determined there is only a 7 percent chance that Mr. Cobain's entire oeuvre would have been excellent. I believe the evidence I presented as Exhibit C — David Bowie's catalog — also proves this point beyond a shadow of a doubt. The chances are much higher that Mr. Cobain would have stumbled creatively, so on that basis alone, it is unfair to rank him higher than my client.

"Which brings me to the songs. Mr. Grohl has demonstrated an ability to write a diverse array of material — in mood, substance, and sound. He can do dark and heavy and aggressive and alienating; he can do light and poppy and melodic and appealing. He's written about love, heroes, family, cows, and Courtney Love . . . I mean, phony actors. Not all his songs are about self-loathing and stomach problems. I contend that being trapped in a pit of despair and drug addiction, and howling about it along to a couple of chords, does not automatically make one a genius songwriter.

"Finally, my client is clearly a better musician than Mr. Cobain — even Mr. Grohl's most ardent detractors will admit that he's one of the greatest drummers in rock history, up there with such names as Bonham, Moon, and Peart. Also let me say that he is dependable and relatable, an everyman with an unimpeachable work ethic who always provides solid songs and live shows. He is not an erratic flake known more for a tabloid lifestyle than his musical work.

"I implore you to think long and hard about Mr. Grohl's career with Foo Fighters, and reject these outrageous charges. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I eagerly await your verdict."

Dave Grohl is talented, but no doubt he was probably pretty envious of Kurt Cobain. The only problem w the argument that Nirvana wouldn't have had as much of a successful career as Foo Fighters, is that Nirvana and particularly Kurt were SUPER FUCKING FAMOUS, and they had MILLIONS of die hard followers, even in Kurts most sick, and paiinful days he was writing better songs than foo fighters, and only a tiny babys handful was about stomach pain... not to mention all of kurts songs were a lot easier to listen to than Dave's.... as talented as Dave is, his voice gets to be way more annoying a lot quicker.

Your just jealous about dave grohl because you aren't famous smart ass and your a dumb ass loser because you think your hot shit and how would david grohl have killed kurt if he wasn't even there man if I were dave grohl I would be kicking your ass

For all of those who are familiar with Cobain's brand of sarcasm and humor, let me just point out that on "In Utero", only one song had a guitar riff co-written or written by Grohl. The name of the song given to it by Cobain was "Scentless Apprentice", with a chorus of him screaming "HEYYY GO AWAYYYYYYYYY GO AWAYYYYYYYYY GO AWAYYYYYYY!"

Enough said.

Grohl was a jealous infantile jackass, and now he is a guilty, murdering, infantile jackass. Another person recommended reading Grohl's body language in Nirvana interviews, and they are right. Anyone with any ability to see into people, anyone with ANY gift of natural psychological insight, can PLAINLY see that Grohl was a jealous and immature douche who could not wait to "upstage" Cobain. too bad he doesn't have the talent to do so, and too bad Cobain likely died because of it.

Fuck you Dave Grohl. Even if you didn't kill Kurt, directly or indirectly. you're a talentless douchebag, and anyone who knows him personally can vouche for that!

LMAO...Dave Grohl is a talentless piece of crap. I believe Courtney called him something like a "sub-mediocre kind of guy who does this 'nice guy' thing" and she is right. he is a fake, lying, attention whore and his songs are awful. I would not be surprised if out of jealousy he killed Cobain. He did benefit an awful lot from Cobain's death. Funny too, how Pat Smear, his former bandmate and band leader from the germs, darby crash, also killed himself.

Don't get me wrong, I love both Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl and they both definitely have their place in the music world. We do not constantly need to be pitting them against each other. Dave Grohl is not a murderous bastard. I doubt he is jealous of Cobain. Seriously. I think it is just hard for Grohl to talk about Cobain since their relationship was a little strained. Cobain, as much as a genius as he was, was sick. Plain and simple. I am tired of hearing that anybody killed Cobain other than himself. While there were situations in his life that may have added stress, the reality is that he was a man with a serious addiction. Stop ripping on Dave Grohl. Stop comparing him to Kurt Cobain.

We all know Dave is better because 1 he could keep his shit together and 2 he never slept with Courtney Love. Dave plays every instrument good and can write well. Let's be honest people who complain are just old people from generation X who won't give up on their hero from when they were 18. Grow up and give Dave RESPECT!!!!.

the proof is in the pudding. The Foo Fighters are slightly less sleep inducing than a quadruple hit of Ambien.

So in summary, Dave Grohl is a murdering bastard, and theres more funk/soul/rock/pop in Kurt's fingernails than Dave Grohls entire career.

Nice try.

I would take the Foos over, say, Paul McCartney's post-Beatles work. They have a lot of solid material. And Everlong and The Best of You are geuninely terrific songs. But Cobain was an amazingly gifted and original songwriter, genuinely poetic. Grohl's a fairly talented plugger who has made good. But too many Foo songs sound too much alike.

As a drummer, Grohl was among the best of that era. But I would take Jimmy Chamberlin of Smashing Pumpkins over him any day of the week.

I dont know which side of this debate I am really on, but I would have LOVED to debate this guy!

1) bringing up longevity is an unfair, almost cruel pointseriously

2) comparing to bowie is also an irrelevant move. There is no evidence that Cobain even once thought to reinvent himself. This decision to creatively branch out is exactly why bowie didnt consistently have enormous impact (even though he should have). Because he was consistently alienating his fans for the sake of his creative genius.

3) NEVER EVER EVER minimize the importance of drugs through out the history of rock and roll. You may as well say just using a guitar to create the leads isnt what rock and roll is about

4) Dont DARE to say that he is a great drummer! He is good, maybe even very good. He does not sit in any where near the Mt. Rushmore of Rock Drummers and to suggest he does only cripples your case with proof of your lack of knowledge. And Neil Peart is a god on a whole other dimension. I will concur however, that Dave is a substantially better musician than Kurt.

Hey, am I the only one who thinks Grohl wrote this himself and possibly pulled the trigger himself? When I watch videos of Dave Grohl speaking about Kurt or with them being interviewed together, DAVE IS SOOOOO JEALOUS OF KURT. You can tell he tries real hard to hide it but he was. Majorly jealous. And I never met any of them or anyone who knew them. I just discern it. I wonder if the investigator who's saying Cobain's death was murder has entertained the idea that he needs to get a REAL alibi from Dave. I know that sounds so horrible from the outside of Nirvana but if you go on www.youtube.com and look at some of those interviews, watch his body language and stuff. I think he framed Courtney even though she seems a little "off". I think she just does crazy stuff for the public. She's probably alot more normal at home. Besides, her daughter seems very well grounded for her age. That typically doesn't just happen. Anyways, if I'm wrong, sorry Dave. I don't know you or any of you to be judging but that's my gut on the whole thing.

I think its rediculous that Grohl is even being compared to Cobain. It always seemed to me Dave was jealous of Kurt's "light". There is something weird about it. Its without couth. Its completely disrespectful. (to the memory of their friendship) And its too hypothetical to even talk about what would have been. Cobain's creativity was a God-given gift. His light came from his soul not from the audiences applauses or the sell of his records...get a grip Dave. You'll never be Kurt man. Never. Your stuff is great though...God bless.

From reading this story I have come to the conclusion that this is not about the greatness of the Dave Grohl or even the Foo Fighters but secretly an attack on Cobain.

Yes Dave was part of Nirvana but to determine if he is a genius then it is only right to compare him to the rest of the other bands in the genre/s or even so far as music in general.

I can't put my own opinion about Dave as I have only heard the mainstream material(monkey wrench etc), but my mates have told me that the is a legend, and from what I've heard he is close, as I heard he made an entire song and put it together playing all of the instruments and singing.

Even though I am a recent Nirvana fan(although I did love Teen Spirit when I was little I was born in 89), a lot of Kurts lyrics have deep meanings in them about life, society, and his own troubles.

I don't want to go down this road, but I have a mix view about the death I believe he did kill himself partly due in fact to his condition(Bi-polar), but from reading about him being "murdered" I can understand, that. But one thing about him being "murdered" conspiracy was that he killed in part because he was going to stop producing music, so if he was alive now I doubt that he would be writing material.

Do a better job next time Ok :D for now this is just lame

Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl himself are comparable to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, or Aerosmith, they have, for a good period of time put out consistently decent material, which, in all fairness is an accolade in itself but to put him above Kurt Cobain is stretching it a bit too far.If the question is who was a better technical musician, literally, who could play the most chords, who had the most mistake-free rhythm, then fair enough it might be a tough call, I would probably say Grohl myself, but throwing the word genius about in Dave Grohl's radius is clearly the action of a hardcore Foo Fighters fanboy. As with the Chili Peppers or Aerosmith, despite a solid body of work and fairly non-slumping popularity they, nor Grohl have ever really changed of revolutionised anything. Never has a Foo Fighters record come out and hundreds of bands have attempted to emulate in vain hope they might sound as incredible as that, never have a generation of alternative music fans fallen astounded on the floor at the brand new sound and revolutionary creative direction of the....Foo Fighters. The guy above saying Nirvana went in that direction because it was marketable, is eseentially incorrect at it's core. Yes, the Seattle sound was marketable at the time, and of course everyone who had the power to attempted to market it, but unlike most music genres, grunge did it's best to repel this. When lumberjack jackets came out in stores as grunge fashion, grungers still didn't buy it, Pearl Jam played gigs in open fields with little to no advertising to avoid Ticketmaster monopolizing the market, if you believe the suicide note and the general outlook of Kurt in his latter days, pretty much the sole reason he killed himself was because he could not help being over-marketed despite the fact it was what he was trying to rebel against.By no means did Kurt Cobain innovate the Seattle sound, Green River, Malfunskhun, Mother Love Bone, Soundgarden and the bands they cite as influences are almost unquestionably to thank for defining how grunge sounded but Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder are both to thank, just as unquestionably for taking that sound and using it to make an entire generation realise that alternative doesn't mean tight-fitting studded attire and elaborate make-up, unless you want it to, it means alternative, it means not what the mainstream has informed you to like.Without Nirvana there would be no Foo Fighters, and if there had been they probably would have died a death because they soared to fame as one of the first post-grunge bands, without grunge there would be no post-grunge and as incredible a musician as Dave Grohl may be; a better musician than Cobain, maybe, a great musician with or without Nirvana, yes, an artistic genius, no, a revolutionary, no, a man that has done anywhere near as much for the industry of which he is a part as Kurt Cobain, definitely not.

Diversely well written and FINALLY; someone has the balls to say it out loud. I have known this all along and for what it's worth, I think Dave Grohl is nothing short of a GENIUS!!! I love him, love his band, his work ethic, tenacity and his never ending love of life, love and music. He is an example for all entertainers to follow and look up to. The fact that he is never-endingly laid back and consistently makes fun of himself and never allows himself to take himself too seriously is a true testiment to the man, one of the greatest the drummers of all time, the musucian, dare I say, the GENIUS of David Eric Grohl. Dave, simply put; YOU ROCK, DUDE!!! I worship you!!!

Cobain changed music? You have to understand, what he did was in the name of corporate venture. It was in the best interest of the music industry to play his crap music because that stuff sold at that time. You talk as if he changed it for the better, which is a complete fallacy. Dave Grohl is the best thing to come out of Nirvana, and should not ever for a second be remembered as one of the SIX drummers they had, but for his own heart and soul band, the Foo Fighters. Grohl is an absolute musical genius, in all forms, and a great stand up guy at that. Sadly it should be the other way around and we should be idolizing him, because you don't idolize someone who whined and blew their head off.

TS

The only reason anyone still talks about cobain is he killed himself and dave grohl who is on top of the music world was in his band. Otherwise who cares. If you think he changed music then you only listen to the radio. Nirvana was going to be short lived whether or not Cobain offed himself. In fact him eating that shotgun was the best thing for music because it forced Dave Grohl to strike out on his own.

Every time I buy a new Foo album I expect to be dissappointed. Because no way one band can have this many great albums one after another. Yet after I listen to it I am blown away.

If Nirvana saved you from Poison thats on you. Some of us are more involved in music to be held to the constraints of radio play. To call Cobain a genious or god all I can say is. You watch too much VH1.

Mark

The difference between Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl is pretty big actually, not just a shotgun. If people had the opportunity to see Nirvana or Foo Fighters, (if kurt was alive) they'd be more keen to the Nirvana gig. You have to remember, Kurt cobain changed the face of rock music, where as before it was all Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith long-haired cock rock. Cobain brought music down to everyones level, to a point where the teens to thirty-somethings would REALLY enjoy his music, which was very very new.

Dave Grohl made catcy songs.... Thats really it. He just continued to make music that fits in to the rest of regular music of today.

Kurt Cobains ideas musically changed "rock history" and his art was outstanding.Dave grohl puts on a good show, with his cool songs.

Verdict is, Kurt Cobain still stands higher, and will do unless something comes along that will shake us musically and make us go "what was THAT?!"

you r on drugs. Dave is a great song writer, and a wonderful front band, not to mention a unbelievable drummer. But lets be real, Maybe 1 or 2 other musicians of the last century can be mentioned in the same breath as the late great kurt cobain

Ev'rything you just said was absolutely, 100% correct! Dave Grohl is a FAAAAAR better musician, entertainer, song writer than Cobain. I mean, if it weren't for Nirvana, of course, Dave Grohl probably wouldn't be as far as he is now, but he'd definitely still be up there! Ev'ry time I listen to Nirvana, I feel cruddy, depressed, sorrowful even if nothing is wrong! But Foo Fighters have great uplifting songs, makes you feel good about life, being able to get over someone or something. Who likes being down in the dumps all the time? Thats no fun! And just for the fact that Dave Grohl continued to do his music after Cobain's suicide, when most people would just stop. No contest, Dave Grohl is better, period! Case closed!

your confusing stamina with genius. Dave gives it his aqll, but his all isw just not good enough, NOBODY has the Foo Fighters as thier favourite band and Karma wise- in the end History will remember Courtney far far far more as innovative than Dave- i know it seems shocking now to you jocky guys with spots or gen xers holding onto "Courtneys a Beyatch" But the fact is Courtneys a GENIUS who fucked herself by marrying KC, Dave gets teh accolades like this piece of true hack writing- Christ in my entire life i have never seen such a badly written "rock review" with sucha stupid trope flimsily holding it together but its not like your arguing for Metallica opr even the banal voiced Kiedas, your arguing for Grohl NOT the nicest guy in rock a total cunt actually , ask his ex wives, ask Frances Bean Cobain what this son of the Manager of a Merrill Lynch did to HER, Besides Courtney has never writtena songabout Grohl and i doubt she even cares much that he exists, healways hated Kurt. loathed him and was jaelousand his hotility is soooo transparent here, Court got fucked in this deal , but certainly not ultimately, Grohl and Creed ansd Nickelback willbe recalled in the same breathe with Grohls only Caveat being that he was once the 6th salaried drummer to one of the greatest writer sin the history of rock n roll, and you may be inPheonix but Honey im up here in New Haven at Yale and studying American History as a major ...... i think im pretty qualifiedto put you in your dumpster with your beer and Fox talking points"

You are confusing quantity with quality. The first three Foo Fighter albums were excellent, with gusts to great on the first two. The last three have been generic FM radio rock, one song sounds like the next and that one sounds sort of like the last. I love Grohl's drum work, he has made better albums with QOTSA and Probot than he has with his own band. The Stones outlived the Beatles but that does not make them better.
