Brokeneck Mountain

It'd be easy to talk about a Canadian-sponsored film festival and slip in the requisite “Take off, hoser” and “Drink more Molson, eh?” comments, à la toque-wearing Bob and Doug McKenzie. But while we might chortle and giggle like a third-grader over a fart joke, the fleeting laughter's over in about 10 seconds. Juvenile and amusing? Yes. Cinematic and inspirational? Not so much.

So we'll go with inspired, which we are by Arizona native and paraplegic Darol Kubacz’s determination in Uhuru Ascent: Into Thin Air. Inspired by the Swahili word for “freedom,” the flick chronicles a trek to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro’s highest point by a group of disabled veterans and civilians, a task so arduous that it had never before been successfully completed.
