Among the many wonderful things about the Maricopa County Fair is that it’s one of the few places where you can get religion at Madame Zelda’s Puppet Circus and then sit back for some light entertainment at the Gospel Throwdown. And as you might expect, there’s so much more to take in when the fair opens for a five-day run. For starters, there’s the Colgate Country Showdown (where American Idol winner Jordin Sparks got her first big break in 2006) at 5 p.m. Saturday on the main stage. There’s also livestock, motocross, figure-8 races, magic, more than 50 local acts scheduled to perform, Doggies of the Wild West, the Amazing Rain Forest Experience, and an unquantifiable amount of fried food.
