J.D. Samson

By Benjamin Leatherman

Published on May 08, 2008

The over-the-top androgynous appearance of J.D. Samson often leads to confusion about what, exactly, is the gender of the cross-dressing performance artist and member of indie rock's Le Tigre. (Is he a she? Is she a he?) One thing there's no doubt about is the turntablism talents of "DJ J.D." (who is, in fact, female), as she's extraordinarily gifted at rocking the record decks inside nightclubs. Samson's playlist runs the gamut from indie-rock remixes and electro to party jams and '90s hits. Get a sample of Samson's skills on Saturday, May 10, when she visits the Rogue Bar, 423 North Scottsdale Road in Scottsdale, for the weekly's Shake! extravaganza. Residents William Fucking Reed, Ashley Nicole, and Funkfinger are also scheduled to spin. Doors open at 9 p.m. and admission costs $5 before 10:30 p.m., $8 before midnight, and $10 afterwards.
