RAY OF HOPE

Who else can they victimize?: New Times' coverage of this latest public-records outrage by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his goons is full-of-irony great! As is the bravery of "140-pound" pit bull reporter Ray Stern. Sarah Fenske's column got it right about Nazi-thug deputies who think they can do anything they please as troopers in Joe's Gestapo ("Please Tell Me We're on Candid Camera," June 19; see also various Valley Fever blog posts, including "Arpaio's thugs threaten to arrest a New Times reporter for looking at public records," Ray Stern, June 11).

All that the deputies were there to do was find out who sent e-mails in support of Mayor Phil Gordon and who's been especially critical of the sheriff because of his pogroms against anybody with brown skin in this county. They already know Gordon — along with a growing number of other big politicians (even the usually cowardly governor) — disapproves of them, so they are asking: Who else can we victimize?!

Prominent citizens and others will then be added to Joe's "Enemies List" (Sarah Fenske, November 29). Joe Inc. — which includes his lackey [County Attorney] Andrew Thomas, and Thomas' discredited special prosecutor, Dennis Wilenchik [also one of Arpaio's taxpayer-paid-for private attorneys] — already tried this with New Times' readers. They wanted to snag New Times' Internet files so they could run smear campaigns on anybody notable who was tuning in to the newspaper's critical coverage of these scumbags.

Now they're looking for victims by dogging the mayor's and city manager's e-mails.

Joe (or, more likely, Chief Deputy David Hendershott, who tells the senile geezer what to do and think, Dick Cheney-style, nowadays), you're not fooling anybody in this county who has any sense. Unfortunately — and you're counting on this to win re-election — there aren't that many voters out there with a lick of brains. Just look at the inbred, nitwit nativists who are driving the anti-immigrant movement!
Paul Sheffield, Phoenix

Add C.J. to the list: This [MCSO records search against Mayor Gordon] has nothing to do with immigration and everything to do with Arpaio's feeling backed into a corner and lashing out with a fishing expedition. He can't say what he's looking for because he doesn't know himself.

Meanwhile, the MCSO has become a bad joke that attracts nothing but the lunatic fringe of law enforcement. No officer with an active respect of the U.S. Constitution would go along with stopping vehicles on false pretenses in the hopes of finding illegal aliens (or anything else, for that matter).

How do I know they employ such tactics? In December, I was driving in a primarily Hispanic neighborhood in central Mesa when I was pulled over by two MCSO vehicles. The officer's smirk went away as I rolled down the window and he saw that I was a white man. When he asked for my license, registration, and insurance, I lied and said I had none of it. The officer told me I was free to go. As he was returning to his vehicle, I called to him, "Hey, why did you pull me over?" He paused for a couple of seconds before calling back, "Your license plate illumination looked dim."

Say what?!

We need to do something about this lunacy. Real criminals and victimizers are free to roam Maricopa County, while Arpaio uses taxpayer money to seal his next election victory. There is a constituency of insecure, racist, disillusioned white folk out there who will continue to vote for him as long as he continues to deliver brown people to the border.

Now that his moral and ethical corruption is finally getting the exposure it deserves, the moderates will be more motivated than ever to vote him out. Arpaio must surely be wondering if even his hardcore reactionary base of voters will be enough to keep him in power much longer.

He's getting desperate. My guess is things are going to get even weirder very soon.
C.J. Green, Mesa

Standing up to the fascist regime? If the Sheriff's Office is so understaffed that it can't open satellite jails and has to shut down most of the visitation hours because of a lack of staff, then why are deputies scanning useless documents at Phoenix City Hall that really could be just for gaining the e-mail addresses of citizens who have sent less-than-favorable opinions of the MCSO to the mayor's office?

It's not as though, a few months ago, [the sheriff's and county attorney's forces] didn't try to do the same with New Times readers.

New Times is awesome for standing up to this fascist regime and for reporting on things that local media refuse to cover in fear of reprisal from the MCSO. The Arizona Republic is catching on, but I don't think the paper's whole heart is in it — otherwise, it wouldn't bury some stories about the negative things the MCSO does.
David Saint, Phoenix

Is this really you, Joe?: Ray Stern is an uppity, annoying dweeb who should learn some manners.

My deputies stopped him from rummaging through the documents to be scanned because it would disrupt the process.

As stated, he was welcome to look at any documents that my deputies had already processed and returned.

If he hadn't yelled and screamed at my attorney, there would have been no disorderly conduct charges ("Disorderly conduct charge reappears against Ray Stern," Feathered Bastard blog, November 27).

If Ray Stern would learn some manners and self-control, he would be much more effective.
Joe Arpaio, Fountain Hills

Honduras won't be going away: Ray Stern just got in the way of Joe Arpaio's latest waste of taxpayer money. More and more people, even the sheriff's base in Sun City, are getting fed up with this waste — especially in tough economic times.

Next time, many of us hope and pray the Phoenix police "arrest" crybaby [MCSO Captain] Jim Miller or any of the other little scums Arpaio sends out to do his dirty work.

You know, Miller's one of the ones who's been vacationing in Honduras ("The Bird digs up more dirt on Arpaio's henchmen soaking up the sun in Honduras," Stephen Lemons, February 28). Jimbo, you haven't heard the last of that.

Meanwhile, Miller showed the world what a hotheaded "dweeb" he is. Ha, he looked like he was gonna stroke out in the picture [that ran with New Times' coverage]. The whole county is laughing at him over that boo-hoo report on the incident that he wrote ("Maricopa County Sheriff's Office captain: 'My staff and I were humiliated,'" Valley Fever blog, June 13).

Joe, isn't this guy Miller a big liability to you? Just saying . . .
Jim Bob Modesto, Phoenix

Soft-boiled brains: There should be a journalism award that's up there with the Pulitzer Prize. It should be called the "Brass Balls Award" for standing up to corruption, and Ray Stern should win it.

Here's a guy who's already up on a completely undeserved disorderly conduct charge because one of the MCSO's private attorneys is a vindictive little bitch (she learned that from little bitches like Arpaio and County Attorney Andrew Thomas). This so-called officer of the court, Michele Iafrate, refused to allow Stern to perform his legal right to photograph public records, and when he rightfully complained, she sicced the sheriff's Selective Enforcement Unit dogs on him.

Next thing you know, he marches right into the city of Phoenix records department and demands to see exactly the same records as Joe Arpaio's goons are reviewing in the sheriff's attempt to smear Phil Gordon!

Man, you could tell from the coverage that these hard-boiled bullies just blew their stacks! It was a thrill to read about this!
Theo Martin, Phoenix

What might've happened?: Regarding the article "Please Tell Me We're On Candid Camera," in which you state, "Sheriff's Captain Jim Miller . . . picked up a couple of random folders sitting on the records counter and waved them in [reporter Ray Stern's] face. 'Take these papers from my hand!' he snarled. 'Take these papers from my hand!'": I wonder what would've happened had Mr. Stern taken the folders while stating: "Certainly, sir, I always follow the lawful orders of a police officer."
Lee Rosenstein, Scottsdale

Call their bluff: Nice job, Ray Stern. I don't usually support being arrested, but I can't help but think, if I were there, I might've gone for it.

The MCSO needed to have its bluff called. And your description is correct: They are "thugs" — Nazi thugs. It's almost a situation where MCSO deputies don't even bother with real criminals anymore. They're just intent on ethnic cleansing.
Dennis Gilman, Scottsdale

Not hard to understand why? Can anyone not understand why Sheriff Joe and the County Attorney Andrew Thomas need to be recalled?

Call 623-206-2039 and say you will help with the recall of these two . . . I'm not sure what to call these two people, who say that they are not accountable to anyone.
William Crum, Phoenix

Stupid Joke: Wow! Guess old age is kicking in for Joke. First it was us here in Guadalupe, and now it's Ray's turn [to get harassed]. What the hell's wrong with so-called badass Joe? Good luck to Ray.
William Robles, Guadalupe

Rednecks in Oregon? Who knew?: I wish we had a sheriff like Joe Arpaio in central Oregon. If only it were legal to shoot these filthy wetbacks, I would be happy!
Ken Rockwell, Bend, Oregon

Bring him down hard: I'm confused because all cops are heroes (country music, award shows, and politicians tell me so).

After reading about Joe Arpaio's suppression of truth and not allowing [Ray Stern] to read public records that anyone should be allowed to read, I hope you bring this bastard down — and down hard.

I hate bullies and I hate people who suppress truth. This guy is both and deserves to be brought to justice for it. Good justice, that is — the kind that is righteous.
Boyd Durkin, via the Internet

Bully for us: Good work standing up to bullies.
Eric Bourland, via the Internet

Look in the mirror for the problem: The public's to blame for police excesses. We've always given cops the benefit of the doubt, allowed them to exceed their legal mandate without repercussions, and remained silent when they abused the authority of their badges.

Put a dirty cop in jail? You know how hard that is, even when guilt is obvious and evidence is not lacking. Don't blame [the MCSO]. Look in a mirror.
Rick Cain, via the Internet

Proud of what, Rose?: If no one likes Joe's tactics, then, I wonder, why he keeps getting re-elected year after year? You should be proud of him.
Rose Young-Stewart, via the Internet

Shining a light on abuse: Mr. Stern, you did a great public service to show the extent the MCSO will go to intimidate people. How many chances do they get to abuse power? After 16 years in office, one must get jaded and no longer see himself [clearly] — which goes for those who support these tactics. Abuse of power must go. Keep shining the light on all this!
Name withheld

The taxpayers lose — again: More of the same from the sheriff and his goons. The investigation against Phil Gordon will turn up nothing, and the taxpayers will be the big losers. Just like Arpaio's investigation of Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard ("King of Pain," The Bird, April 26, 2007).

At least Arpaio didn't storm in with a search warrant and take computers, which is what he's done to others — the public be damned ("Enemies List," Sarah Fenske, November 27).

Joe gets to peek at other people's personal information in the name of law enforcement? This man is frightening. He will stop at nothing to get to his enemies — which wouldn't be so scary except that he has a badge and gun.

His tactics are reminiscent of Joe McCarthy and, later, Dick Nixon — or worse. He doesn't just pursue his enemies, he fabricates information, destroys records, and lies.

I fear that he's lost his mind and that Chief Deputy Dave Hendershott is running the joint. He's meaner than Joe and has nothing to lose.

helo, my name is alex, and I have a problem. I am supose to go to tent city for a DUI. Whan you think about it,it is not that big of a deal. the tricky part it that I have heart condition that limit's my ability to do work and to fight off infection if i get hurt or sick. Now I dont expect for this comment to go any where, but I hope that an ear will be hearing it. the jail time is not my biggest concern but the fine's that go with it.

up too 4,000 bucks, and climbing.the real thing is that you have to pay to go to jail.what the shit is that about. now I am faced with the very real disition of going through with it, and stay in arizona to rot away with payment's, and on the other hand leave the state and maybee the country, friends and family, with just my guitar in hand and the thought that i might be chashed by that fat fuck sheriff joe.

also just finding out that tent city just lost thier medical licence, so that even if i get sent to the infermery, i could still die from negligence from the oficer's. and that in the end I would advise all residence of AZ, to get the hell out of this state. even worse than that is that this country has finaly reached its limit.government breaking laws just to save face.

I mean, after all, government makes more and more laws, because they have less amd less morals, or ethics.

that is all I can think of

Twas the night before X-mas, and in our apartmentWe were shit out of luck in the financial department

Our socks were thrown near the chimney without careIn hopes the washing machine maintenance guy soon would be there.

The ferrets had escaped the confines of their cage, And were running about the place, shitting in corners with rage.

My husband in his worn sweat pants and I having a night capHad just awoken Fatty from his passed out drunk nap.

When out on the patio there arose quite the clatter. I stumbled to the glass to see what the hell was the matter.

A moment of darkness and then a big flash-Blindly I fell backwards with a resounding crash!

Something was out there hiding in the sand.My husband stumbled over to give me a hand.

We took turns guessing what out of the sandbox would appearZombie bill collectors? Mormon missionaries? The answer was unclear.

What if it were ninja robbers, so stealthy and quick?Or maybe a cracked out hobo thinking he was St. Nick.

Before we knew it, through the door they came,Hooded figures with scrolls, and they called me by name,

Miss Jones, it seems youre in quite the pickle. Sheriff Joe knows youre here and you owe him much more than a nickel.

Confused, I yelled, No! Ive done my time!I went to jail and I paid my fines!

I blow my car every time I commute!Thats when he entered- an evil man in a pink Santa suit.

He looked more like the Grinch with his wide evil sneer. He sat down on the couch and opened a beer.

Well, little missy, it seems you are due,On the very top of my naughty list, I found you.

It is now time to spread some Christmas cheerAnd he opened his pants and said, Come over here.

I gasped in surprise and choked with a sob,Surely he did not expect a sloppy knob job?

Suddenly, I realized who this man was-It was the Sheriff himself, dressed as Santa Claus.

I stuttered and spit in disgust and confusion,Surely this must be a nightmare illusion!

What humiliation do you still have in store?I got the DUI, went to jail, oh, god, what more?

The Sheriff just smiled and said with a grin,You stayed in my motel, would you like to again?

NO! I screamed, No, I wont repeat my offense!I suffered and paid my whole ugly penance!

This is blackmail, said the nasty old Joe, Now open wide, heres my rod!Im making you suck off me and my whole sheriffs squad.

I cried and I sniffed, but obliged out of fear,Hope your happy Sheriff Joe, and have a happy fucking New Year!

btenDear Editor,

If everyone donates $50 to Solar Cookers International, that might be enough to supply solar cookers to all the people in Africa who are currentlycooking with firewood. (And we could keep up with population growthby donating another $25 by 2025, and $50 again by2050.) This would mean not having to cut down trees forfirewood--which causes severe deforestation and habitat loss, andtakes away from quality time spent with one's children.Solar Cookers International is at1919 21st Street, #101Sacramento, CA 95811

I read the Savage Love article on the 13th and I was completely pissed off about what Dan Savage's reaction and retaliation towards the Prop 102 passing. I know that gay marriage is a touchy issue for both parties but if gays want marriage, don't follows Dan's example. This writer is asked questions that are very concerning to those that seek advice. And when you tear at heterosexuals who ask you for advice calling everything they do in life is gay, Thats crossing the line. I can see Dan is upset but to be nice to only the gay community and start being offensive with the straight community? I don't think you will get what you wish. And one more thing....My gay brother and his lover voted for prop 102. How is that for irony?

I have been waiting for four months for the man that i have spent every moment with for nearly 13 years. while he was in Joe arpaio's care I was in an accident and now am disabled. My soul mate chose his sentence because he was advised that it would be the best move at putting our family back together. a few days before release the guys were playing handball and next thing they all knew he went head first full speed into the three foot wall separating them from the dorms. the guys in the dorms have told me that they actually heard the collision. the first night after he was released we laid down together in his bed (we were going to sleep apart because of my broken back and his injuries), i fell asleep and woke up to him having a seizure. we had to call 911 they were convinced it was an OD they kept giving him narcan. well they began to arlift him to John C. Lincoln while en route they gave him a shot of dilantin and he came out of it. the minute they landed they gave him state health care and called us to pick him up even though the doctor knew that he colided with a wall hard enough to break his collar bone in three places and brake part of his shoulder they did no further tests. we had to wait two days for his access, unfortunately we didn't know that we didn't have that long. the next day he was so lathargec he kept closing his eyes but he said it was because he had so much pressure behind his eyes. so he took two bayer aspirin and went to bed and i woke at two thirty and imediately ran to check on him but he was already gone. there was blood in his eyes and a stream coming out of his nose. i blame joe. and i need help. i don't want him to have to go to potters field and all the guys he completed the program all can contest to the fact that he asked for medical help but was denied. he told me the night he got hurt that he was told that he could go ahead and get help but if he did then he would have to serve two more months. He said he asked for an aspirin and was denied they werent allowed to wet sheets for his head or cut them to immobilize his injuries so the guys wrapped him in his bedsheet and he stuck it out. his best friend told me how sick he was while he suffered the last couple days with no help and just before his release. I thank god that i got him for two and a half days but he was so ill i didn't know what to do. i just lost the love of my life when all he was doing was trying to make himself a better father and husband please help me tell me where to go and what to do and how to pay the twelve hundred it will take to cremate him he was not a nobody soon the guys are setting up a memorial and it will be seen how special he was. he was thirty three years old and not a trouble maker he just had some mild charges he was trying to take care of so that we could go to washington state where are family is. i can't leave him hear I need some help and he deserves for me to fight for him and i will but please help me i am in a wheelchair and am broke. the autopsy is not going to be released for a while but i am not stupid what ever it is it will be from complications from a head injury, please help me fight these monsters who took a hero and threw him in front of a bus. please help me to act. please respond via email and set up a what next cenario. JP and i have been readers since we lived in seattle where we met and he made me promise that i would come to you if something happened so please help us. as long as i am working to fight for him and my son i am able to ward off absolute devastation and loss. kathleen madden

My husband is at the Estrella tents on work release. I took the bus down to see him on Saturday - It was cold, desolate, windy and empty. I walked right through the gates and pounded on several doors to no avail. I finally ran across a guy at the self-surrender pit who gave me the phone # of the person he was supposed to call to come out and get him. I called and was informed that I wouldn't be allowed to visit my husband because he's on work release. I sat at the bus stop alone and cried. Nice job Sheriff Joe of informing inmates families on policies. No where in the recordings we wait for on hold for half hours or more is there information stating this. Conditions in the tents are herendous. I know this is jail, but can't they even treat our loved ones like humans - serving expired food should be forbidden. People get sick and die in there. The Sheriffs family are the ones making the money off of the vending machines. I hate Phoenix because of this and can't wait to leave this state. Someone should arrest Sheriff Joe or one of his family members and throw them in with the inhumane conditions.

Please publish the following Press Release in your paper: Title: AFRICAN-AMERICAN DEMOCRATS DISENFRANCHISED & DISRESPECTED!The Arizona Democratic Party (ADP) has disenfranchised Arizonas African-American Democrats and is allowing the most significant event in American and African-American history to take place with African-Americans sitting on the sideline watching, instead of participating with a front-row seat.

On April 26, 2008, the ADP selected 67 delegates to the Democratic National Convention (DNC). No African-American full delegate was selected to represent Arizona in the Barrack Obama Campaign.

During the voting process, the last opportunity to elect and meet the affirmative action goal as required by the DNC and ADP delegate selection guidelines was filled by two non-African-Americans, leaving Phoenix Councilman Michael Johnson as an alternate.

Given the opportunity to correct this error, which was called a mistake by Obama campaign officials, no action appeared to be considered necessary by the ADP until approached by former Phoenix Councilman Calvin C. Goode.

Councilman Goode, along with a group, The Concerned Citizens of the Democratic Party, met with Don Bivens, Chairman of the ADP, to discuss ways to redress this disrespect to the African-American community and to Councilman Michael Johnson. Bivens suggested that a formal challenge be submitted to the DNC, ADP, and the Obama campaign, which was completed by the Concerned Citizens of the Democratic Party in May 2008.

Councilman Goode also included a personal letter along with the challenge, highlighting that DNC rules had not been followed nor affirmative action goals met. The letter requested two African-American Obama delegates. (A copy of the letter is attached.)

After receiving the challenge and Councilman Goodes letter, the DNC concluded that no DNC rules had been violated and that the ADP had the responsibility to address the inequity. The ADP in turn rejected the challenge and has since moved on.

After extensive and substantial debate, the Concerned Citizens of the Democratic Party has decided to do the following:1.Inform the community of a process that on the surface appears flawed and seek support in finding ways to fix it;2.Speak up for the disenfranchised who have no voice;3.Not allow another slap in the face to go unnoticed and unchecked.

The Arizona Democratic Party must be held accountable for both its action and lack thereof in this process. For more information, contact the Concerned Citizens of the Democratic Party directly C/O Calvin C. Goode, 1508 E. all S. joe is trying to do is help clean up this country. I actually in the past have known illeagals and not one of them of the many i know live legit. Everysingle illeagal that i have known does drugs, sells, drugs or is involved with some kind of illeagal activity. and as for gillman of the new times, who goes and gossips like a child about the protesters who are simply out there to make a change. he should not be allowed to print fales avrisment about the poeple he doesn't know anything about and call them racist. i would love to meet him and give him a piece of my mind. knowone is racist but in fact the mexican americans these days. Anyone can argue with that all they want but its stil a fact, i know from personal experience.

All I can say is thank God for Sherif Joe, it's about time someone has the balls to go up against the bleeding heart, illegal loving liberals and uphold our laws. No one but Joe seems to care one bit about this country and it's citizens. Too bad we don't have more like him.

This weeks letters had an interesting "editorial" by a dickweed who felt the need to post multiple times under different names to imply that he was more than 1 crackpot at home alone scratching his nuts in his mother's basement and ranting about the evil of 'wetbacks' and the great job Bojoe the Clown is doing. This proves to me that you're a fucking idiot that shouldn't be armed with a keyboard. The issue is this: my uncles who have served their country as veterans would not be able to drive through one of these 'sweeps' because they would be harrassed and humiliated for the crime of being and looking Mexican American;I look Anglo myself and therefore would likely not be subjected the indignity even though we come from the SAME FUCKING FAMILY!A family that has undoubtedly been in the United States a lot longer than yours so get off your high horse and try to understand that this is an attck on the Constitution, whatever your beliefs about immigration. And for what its worth, in the past I worked in an industry surrounded by "illegals" and I can tell you that like any other population, good and bad people abound, but they bear no resemblence to the ignorant stereotypes idiots like you love to throw around.

I have been reading your articles about "Douchebag" Arpaio for about four years. I think the only way to really defeat him would be to get him in on these debates with Dan Saban. Right now Arpaio is pretty much saying he doesn't have to debate Saban. The real reason of course being, that he would more than likely be defeated. This asshole has got to go and the only way is the debates. This guy is insane and needs to be thrown out with the trash in 2008 for all the people that have suffered!
