The punk-rock ethos, if such a thing existed, hardly left room for calculated image creation. But an impressive punk iconography remains, thanks in part to the likes of Ruby Ray and Dawn Wirth. Armed with a camera and a scant supply of expensive film, Ray and Wirth honed their photog skills amid the chaos of California's first-wave punk scene, capturing bands they loved, like The Mumps, The Bags, and The Germs. "People thought punks were crazy, but I felt we were totally modern and aware. I felt the new music deserved new images," says Ray, who, along with Wirth, braved the odd kick in the ribs (or worse) for that perfect shot.
