Novelist turns her pen toward the real-life quinceañera

Changing Hands Bookstore's an old hand at connecting real life and book life, reminding us that reading is part of enjoying the world. In that funkified, life-affirming tradition, the Julia Alvarez author event kicks off with a quinceañera fashion show by Azteca Wedding Plaza. After the tiaras, spangles, and big skirts go by, the focus shifts to Alvarez's nonfiction work Once Upon a Quinceañera: Coming of Age in the USA.

Alvarez, best known for her novel How the García Girls Lost Their Accents, spent her early childhood in the Dominican Republic and now lives and teaches in Vermont, an equally foreign and intriguing place.
