Next-gen ceramicists break the mold

Ceramicists always wonder why they’re left in the dust while painters and sculptors get the glory. Let’s face it, clay boy, no one’s gonna care about your pot unless they can smoke it. Maybe that’s why Midwestern artists Teri Frame, Alex Hibbitt, and Liz Zacher decided to combine mixed-media and performance art with traditional ceramics in the new “Midstream: New Ceramics From the Heartland” exhibit.

According to the show’s curator, Peter Held, some ceramic artists are now taking an interdisciplinary approach and incorporating video or installations: “The field at large is shifting and re-interpreting what it means to be a contemporary artist using clay.” Cool. Maybe these guys won’t be stuck working at those make-and-take pottery painting stores after all.
