Southern DiscomfortFaulkner would be proudBy Steve JansenPublished on August 20, 2008 at 4:11amReading the press release for Dearly Departed, a play in the first week of its run at Chyro Arts Venue, comparisons to William Faulkners As I Lay Dying are inevitable. However, instead of hicks transporting a corpse in a pine-box coffin, the David Bottrell/Jesse Jones comedy follows the emotional journeys of hicks, including one by the name of Ray-Bud, who drink too much white lightning to deal with an upcoming funeral. There are also meddling, know-it-all neighbors (Southerners always have an opinion) and shady folks trying to con others to give up the dough (Southerners are always trying to make a deal). In short, its quintessentially Southern.
