Reading the press release for Dearly Departed, a play in the first week of its run at Chyro Arts Venue, comparisons to William Faulkner’s As I Lay Dying are inevitable. However, instead of hicks transporting a corpse in a pine-box coffin, the David Bottrell/Jesse Jones comedy follows the emotional journeys of hicks, including one by the name of Ray-Bud, who drink too much white lightning to deal with an upcoming funeral. There are also meddling, know-it-all neighbors (Southerners always have an opinion) and shady folks trying to con others to give up the dough (Southerners are always trying to make a deal). In short, it’s quintessentially Southern.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Aug. 21. Continues through Sept. 6, 2008
