Instant Death

SMoCA fetes the Polaroid prior to its decommissioning

One of the art world’s greatest tragedies is scheduled to take place at 12 a.m. January 1, 2010. That’s when the Polaroid goes kaput.

In case you haven’t heard, the cats behind the instant-film enterprise are only making enough consumer product to last through the end of 2009. There’s a chance that the technology will be sold to another company, but there’s also the possibility that Polaroid completely dies.

Either way, we’re in sweet denial. We heart Polaroid, and firmly believe that it’s impermanent. How else to explain the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art-organized Community Polaroid Project, where folks can exchange all sorts of little square photos with other peeps? The event takes place in conjunction with Pedro Meyer's “Heresies” exhibition at SMoCA.
