More Human than Human

Big Apple slam poet likes the sprite in you

The odes to self-love in pop culture are legion, ranging from Cyndi Lauper's pouty-voiced paean "She Bop" to the Divinyls' slinky "I Touch Myself." NYC poet Jon Sands' "Being Human Being" starts with self-inflicted lust, but swiftly traces its way to playfully affirming his love for humanity's, well, humanness. The two-fisted squishing of our spare tire. The errant criticism that momentarily throws us off our game. Impromptu, schedule-eschewing lovemaking.

The powerhouse poet brings his throaty timbre to the Phoenix Art Museum. The Cincinnati native – who jumped head first into the leagues-deep slam poetry scene of New York and found himself as the youngest ever member of the esteemed LouderARTS poetry slam team, later becoming a finalist in the National Poetry Slam in Austin, Texas – will perform with the Phoenix Slam Team.
