Grrl Power

Slammin’ Austin chicks channel AIDS Wolf, Shearing Pinx

An all-female punk band such as Finally Punk sounds like a conveniently packaged, easily categorized gimmick band. We hear you saying something like, “What, is this, like, Bratmobile 2.0?” No, music snob, it’s not. This group is anything but that.

You see, while listening to the Austin-based riot-grrl ensemble, all sorts of images and associations come to mind, a sign that the music is strong. For those needing a relevant comparison, think about a moshing of the moody, catchy rock of fellow Austin band Yellow Fever, the unabashed intensity of AIDS Wolf, and a sprinkle of Shearing Pinx-like noise elements.

But wait, there’s more. Listening to a tune like, say, “Coffee, Tea, and Misery,” we hear rah-rah vocal stylings juxtaposed with energetic percussion; think a stripped-down, punked-out version of Foot Village.

But wait, there’s even more. Unfortunately, we’re about to exceed our word count for this piece, so hear Finally Punk for yourself when the band performs at Boo Berry Fort.
