The Not-So-Little Mermaid

Artist’s work links cyber reality to childhood dreams

People are into some weird shit these days. For example, mermaid porn, which some viewers may see in Jessica Dolence’s “Sequence” exhibit at eye lounge. In one of Dolence’s digital works, a mermaid coquettishly lifts her skirt, exposing turquoise pubic mounds that are known to grow on such nubile young water nymphs.

Seriously, though, Dolence’s work should appeal to anyone who likes strong art. The recent ASU Herberger College of the Arts graduate and mixed-media artist interlinks the natural world with cyber reality, adding materials such as illustrative and digital imaging to the more traditional mediums of fiber and watercolor. Alongside the mermaid piece, her thematic worlds in “Sequence” are reminiscent of childhood dreams with non-linear, wistful narratives.
