Turn the Other Sheik

’90s pop idol croons tunes from his Broadway colossus Spring Awakening

Head’s up: Duncan Sheik is coming to town. But the singer/songwriter won’t be performing his ’90s radio hits “Barely Breathing” and “Half-Life” this time out. Instead, he’ll be playing songs from his colossal, Tony-winning Spring Awakening, the Broadway tuner adapted from Frank Wedekind's controversial 19th-century play, for which Sheik and Steven Sater composed the score. The musical swept the Tonys last year with eight wins, including one for Best Musical and another for Sheik, whose recording of the show nabbed him a Grammy, as well.

Pop-music fans and Broadway aficionados alike are counting the moments ’til Sheik and members of the original Broadway cast will revisit “The Bitch of Living,” “Totally Fucked,” and other fun-time numbers from Awakening.
