The secret, we’re pretty sure, is in the hair.

Not only does West Coast comedian Ngaio Bealum boast the most impressive dreads this side of Whoopi Goldberg, but his comedy counterpart would likely agree that Bealum’s material is both unfailingly intelligent and worldly. But Bealum is not content to tress, er, rest there. His goatee ranks right up there with that of Colonel Sanders, and Luke Perry wishes he sported those sideburns.

Slap on some smart-dude glasses and a sharp suit, and you’ve got a comic whose world-weary befuddlement, talent for improv, and effortless rhythm (he was frontman and conga-beater for the Bay Area’s MostChill Slackmob hip-hop collective) have scored him slots on The Sarah Silverman Program, Evening at the Improv, BET, and the San Francisco International Comedy Competition. The Samson of standup even harnesses his talents to support causes he believes in, speaking out for the legalization of marijuana.
