This article said nothing about illegals they were talking about legal and perhaps citizens who are being harrassed and stopped for trivial infractions. I am hispanic but my grandparents on my fathers side went west in the covered wagons and if i was stopped and harrassed like these people i would bring a lawsuit against the department responsible... oh and by the way i am a millionaire that drives a hyundai. They wont know who they are messing around with until it is too late.

Illegal aliens break the law by stepping on U.S. soil. Once they are here, they receive medical services, steal because they should not be here in the first place, as well as education for their illegal children. We need to take car of our own. Our education and health system would operate so much more efficiently if we did not have mexicans draining off the system. For example: mexicans tend to have many more children then americans, while they hold jobs that a teenager working after school would have. How can taxes from some one earning 15000 a year support sending 6 children to shcool. Thus putting additional strain on the rest of the legal citizens of this country. If Mexico has failed their citizens, it is not our problem. Why can't mexico be like canada, our neighbor to the north. Canada obviously knows someting the mexicans don't.

I am SO glad you are getting this story out. This should NEVER happen to people. Even if the people WERE illegally here in the US, they should be treated with respect. But this overkill for a license plate light is the most ridiculous abuse of power I have ever heard of. This is terrible what's happening to people in this town.

Michael Laceys story, The Birds column, and Paul Rubins article in New Times made me ashamed to be a Maricopa County resident. If I read these articles from afar -- and were thinking of moving here, or even visiting here -- Id immediately change my mind. Oppressive government officials, like Arpaio and Thomas, are bad for us all -- whether the white trash who keep electing them knows it or not.

Who does Michael Lacey think he is to write such crap?! These spics may be American citizens, technically, but they are still part of the problem in this country. You know they are harboring illegals, even if it cant be proven. I applaud Joe Arpaios keeping his foot on their necks. Hes standing up for Americans!

From Letters to the Editor:
[Maria del Carmen] Garcia Martinez did wrong by being an illegal alien. She wouldnt have gotten her arm broken if she had obeyed the law and stayed in Mexico.
And did it ever occur to you that most of the illegal aliens in this country are Mexican. They are brown-skinned, not white-skinned, so consequently police look for Mexicans! Who else, Germans?
Guadalupe was a shit-pot community 80 years ago, and it will be a shit-pot community 80 years from now - because of the half-assed people who live there. A classic example of a half-assed Mexican is Manual Valenzuela, driving his brother-in-laws car without a drivers license with the license-plate light out. This taco was just itching to get picked up.
Arpaio didnt threaten the mayor of Guadalupe. He told the mayor she had 90 days to cancel the contract and that she was free to do so. Guadalupe knew it couldnt do without Arpaio, and it came crawling back. They put in a new mayor who wanted Arpaio. Aint democracy grand?
Just like we voted for Arpaio time after time. Dont you just love it?
Lacey, did you ever wonder why, in the Western Hemisphere, the two countries with the highest living standards are Canada and the United States, while Latin America is a shit pot? That is because we are settled by white, northern Europeans who were hard-working, educated, and organized.
The Spanish copulated with the Indians, and they produced shit. And now this shit is flooding into the U.S. and Canada because we are superior and they want some of what weve got. Read history!

From Letters to Editor:
Three articles in your March 19 edition really drive home the point about Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and (to a lesser, but still important, degree) his sidekick, County Attorney Andrew Thomas.
First, if anyone in his or her right mind ever believed Joe Arpaio wasnt racially profiling, your cover story proves once and for all that he most certainly is (Are Your Papers in Order? Michael Lacey). The harassment that this Yacqui Indian family (American citizens all) went through cannot be tolerated in a free society.
Who does this petty tyrant think he is?!
Then, The Bird article on the poor Mexican lady who got her arm broken because she wouldnt put her (supposedly voluntary) fingerprints on deportation papers really got me fuming (Bad Break, Stephen Lemons, March 19). Yes, she shouldnt have been in the country, the Nativists will fume, but Sheriffs Office personnel have no right to treat her like an animal. Whether the cretins who vote Joe in over and over know it or not, even foreigners on our soil have Constitutional rights.
Where does this petty tyrant get off?!
Next comes the story about Arpaios detectives threatening a former State Bar official and Superior Court judge because went after County Attorney Thomas on what (to any rational and honest individual) were obvious ethics violations. This constituted an outright threat to this individual, who not only did his job but tried to do what was right.
Who do these petty tyrants think they are?!
I pray every night that Joe Arpaio and Andy Thomas will someday get theirs. They both need to wind up in prison, where I hope Mr. Arpaio will die alone of old age.
Kate McDonald, Phoenix

William, thanks for clarifying the Sheriff's Nazi status. However, your comment leaves out important distinctions. If the Sheriff is a Nazi as you say and that the indians are citizens having been here long before the Nazi Sheriff, then you need to acknowledge that the indians were here before all of us. We, the people, created a government and pushed the indians onto the reservations they now enjoy. So let me tell you the solution, transfer all of your property and possessions to the indians. Pick whichever nation you like. But transfer everything back to them in protest of the U.S. governments role. Then get on the first jet back to whatever region of the world from which your kin originate. What I'm getting at is we need to examine what we are trying to accomplish. To simply lash out without a complete historical context is to apply solutions that will simply will not work. Regardless whether its the Sheriff's Dept. or the rest of us. As for the deputies wearing masks, I don't like it but I understand it. They are concerned that their families will be threatened by the mindless protestors who refuse to assist in pushing the criminal element from their community. New Times certainly has a different perspective, but it's every bit as slanted as the rest of the media. Can we just report the news in the news section and put all the human interest stuff in the editorial section?

To Editorial Assistant - it's not about arpaio - it's all about his enablers, who use him as a puppet for their own agendas. Follow the money - made off the suffering of human misery. Lawyers get rich. Which religion controls the state and their pocketbook? The self-righteous have created the hatred and bigotry in the name of which God? Those with no conscience or soul rule.

Dear Micheal, The article in the New Times is interesting but it is only one side. I sympathize with the people who have been wrongly targeted but something has to be done. I'm 30 years old and in school. I'm also looking for a part time job. I went to the car wash the other day to see if they were hiring and the manager told me no. As I walked out I noticed the guys drying the cars. I am almost positive they are illegal. Yes I called MCSO's hot line. I'm also sick of going to the bus stop and standing next to a bunch of illegals waiting for construction workers to pick them up, while standing in the trash they throw on the ground. I know it's there trash because I see the scum bags throw it there. Your welcome to check it out. It's on the corner of Priest and Baseline. Sherrif Joe needs to do his job right!!!!!

Ya WE are sick of Joe "harassing" all of us "impaired" drivers too. I mean all we ever wanted to do is make it home! To go to sleep. We are tired of being at the bar, its no good for us anymore and we will just end up getting in a fight or spending all of our money. But oh no some fat WHITE redneck that has a badge had other plans for us. All I was doin was driving a car and he singled me out of ALL the other cars on that St. I mean Lisa was supposed to drive me home but then she went home with this strapping young lad that was O so sweet talking and said he wanted to sweep her porch. I am so sick of these jackoffs that have nothing better to do.
I am so damn sick of this argument and bullshit! This shit would never fly in ANY other country and I am sick of it. Our hole country is just one big pussy just waitin to get fucked. All just because we are ALL scared of being called racist. Well not this guy.Guadalupe is the biggest shit hole in Arizona and should be wiped off the map! Just think about it, a town with mostly drunk drivers is what? Bound to have a hell of a lot of people pulled over for no apparent reason. But that's the way it goes, lifes a bitch and especially in America so why the hell do you want to be here? Go back to your shit hole country that YOU ran out on like a lil bitch cause "Its fucked up over there" and instead of tryin to fix or take back your government. You chicken shitly rape into another "Premade" and perfectly setup country and try and bring it down to your level. Eat shit! But But this is our land. We was here first. You white people took it from us:( WTF? Shut the fuck up
Ya hear that all you spictacular people and lovers? Bought and paid for!!!!!!!!!!! Quick lesson- "If I sell you a J.I Joe for (one Pennie, good price huh?)and in ten/twenty years,I say "Its was and is mine and I want it back"! WTF are you gonna say? "Get to steppin loco". But I sit there and sneak into your room and play with that J.I. Joe and every once in while I take it and let my familia play with it(cause its human, we gotta have toys) and one of "my people" break its arm off and then its foot off. Your gonna be pissed off, right. But but it was my J.I. Joe first????
I can't even begin to believe you people get paid to write this fucking nonsense! Are you mexican? I mean if you are or aren't, have you ever been to Broadway&24 St.? If not then go rent a house over there and lets talk later. Have you ever seen the way that these people live? Look at fuckin mexico! Do you think just because they come here they are going to change the way they are and their lifestyle? Obviously fuckin not.
This "article" if you wanna call it. Somehow is/gonna be published in the newtimes (notice the lowercase letters)and is complete bullshit and trickery! Even the author knows it! Hence the softness and rounding of the detailed descriptions of how juan carlos takes out the trash every Thursday For miss martinez. Fuckin come on! You left the part out about how he jacks stereos, gang bangs and sells crack Mon-Wed and Fri-Sun. Jesus Christ
I know this will be deleted the second I hit send but oh well! At least the "author/dildo" will either read it or hear about it and discovery what a real piece of shit he is and how lucky he is to have a dipshit employer that PAYS him to write this SHIT. But wait, Oh Oh Oh keep in mind that their is ALWAYS a lil someone who will do his job better and for less money. Anyone have a guess who that is????
I make a challenge to ANYONE who gets the chance to read this. Watch the news for one week and everything said or shown that is of bad conduct or negativity and there is "people of latin descent" involved put a little check mark on a piece of paper and do so for those "from England" (hardy har har). At the end of the week tally them up and and you put that in a special place! Fuck you know what, I am a gambling man do it for a month and if the people of English descent have more check marks at at ANY FUCKING TIME IN ONE WEEK OF THAT MONTH. I will come to the newtimes and make every last retarded one of yous lunch for a year! Up for the challenge???????????
So you can put that in you "Paper" and smoke it bitch.
Love,

Come ON!!! I'm glad Sheriff Joe is on the ball. All of the bleeding heart liberals out there are not looking at the facts. There is more crime in this state than ever and if you look at the stats, it's mostly illegal immigrants committing the crimes. The first crime is breaking a Federal LAw by crossing the border ILLEGALLY!!!!!. That is also a huge slap in the face to those who came here through legal means. I used to be a Democrat until I started educating myself with the facts instead of spewing out emotional ridden crud about "those poor people". I've lived in other countries and believe me, they enforce their border laws. Just once in a while could this rag print stories that tell the honest to goodness facts of the illegal immigrants?

You need to write another article titled: Cry Me a River. If theyre citizens, then theyve got nothing to worry about. People these days just love to feel sorry for themselves. Please dont write anymore bullshit like this.

Theres nothing left to the imagination about this story. Its crystal clear what Joe Arpaio is up to here. Hes hassling every brown-skinned person he can find, in the hopes he will find an illegal alien or two to [get kicked] out of the country.
That the Guadalupe raid last year only netted a handful of illegals says a mouthful. How in the hell is such a sweep justified money-wise, much less human rights-wise with such a meager result. Ill tell you why: Joe only wants the publicity; he doesnt really care about the problem.
Im one of those people who wants the illegal alien problem solved, but not at the expense of human rights. What Joes doing is vile, and its having little if any effect.

Harassing American citizens like this cannot be allowed in our country! Michael Lacey has really unmasked what Joe Arpaio is all about. And its either pure racism or a vendetta mentality. I think its more the latter: the Sanchezes opposed him, and then he made them pay!
Hes famous for exacting revenge on most anybody who crosses him, as many of your stories have proved.

Every time New Times writes an article about the OBVIOUS abuses carried out by of our JOKE of a Sheriff, whatever is in my stomach curdles. When will the citizens of Maricopa County open their fucking eyes to the blatant abuse of power, misuse of power, and total waste of our tax dollars on illegal sweeps and lawsuits against him?
Unfortunately I work in the Wells Fargo building and have to occaisionally see him and ride in the elevator with him. Is it me or does he have the ovious "short man complex" ?? What a timid little bitch he must be to need his "henchman" with him at all times. I am not one to advocate violence against another human, but I can certainly see why someone that does would want to focus their anger on our Sheriff.
I would love to publish my name. But I am fearful of losing my job, not the wrath of a puny little man I wouldn't piss on if he was on fire !

Mr. Lacey:
I didn't enjoy your recent article in New Times. Although it was well written, I didn't enjoy it much because it made me very angry. Why? Because I was very upset about the way the citizens of Guadalupe were treated by the Nazi Sheriff Joe. These citizens are all Indians and were here well before the Nazi Sheriff was.
I used to live in Tempe very near to Guadalupe and often visited there because I enjoyed the people and various religious and other ceremonies. I am a WWII Veteran and I find it outrageous the way the Nazi Sheriff has treated the Indian people there. I'm glad you have brought this to the attention of the public and I am also glad that the Sheriff Department's actions are now being investigated by the Federal Government. Hopefully those who participated as well as those responsible for such actions will be treated by the Feds as well as they treated the Guadalupe citizens.
Thank you for reporting on this,
William Trush

What a wonderful fictional story. I love the whole police state theme. When do the black helicopters appear? Do the illegals rise up and take over Arizona in the end? C'mon, don't leave us hanging. Entertain us with more of your stories.
MCSO is not profiling, people don't get pulled over for "no reason" and Arpaio isn't going anywhere.
No one at the New Times ever wants to talk about the 53% of violent crimes committed by illegals in Maricopa county or the 11% of inmates being illegals nationwide. How about something a little closer to home, like the death of the last 6 police officers were at the hands of illegals.
So don't give me this "poor peoples looking for a better life" crap. Who's paying the price for this better life in dollars and lives? We, the Americans, are.
The people of Maricopa County have voted and they will not be denied of the Sheriff they voted for.
You can keep writing your fictional propaganda, but it's not going to amount to more than a hill of beans.

To answer the last question posed, I'd bet it's Miller Time for Arpaio. Last call won't be until if and when he gets indicted, tried and convicted. Won't hold my breath on that, but maybe miracles can happen? Sure would be sweet to him him as a resident of tent city wearing his own pink undies and eating green baloney.

glw, I have as little respect for the employees of MCSO anymore as I do for those who murdered Jews during WWII, then said later that they were "ordered" to do it. Some things are just wrong! I don't mean to minimize the slaughter of the Jews in this analogy but it is the only one that comes to mind. Those of you who focus on the one issue of immigration to judge this jerk's performance are the sorryest of the lot. You are racist and just don't know it. I'm for a closed border. But Joe's tactics are mean, racist and anti-Christian. They are totally selfserving and I can't believe the people who are manipulated by this sadist.

Minnesota Slim, you shouldnt talk about things you know NOTHING ABOUT...just some info for yet another ingorant moron who doesnt even live in this state, but there are kidnappings daily occuring and what has joe done about it?? arrested and deported the very same people that the kidnappers target, NOT THE KIDNAPPERS...he goes after the little guys, the janitors, the lawn mowers (except the ones that work for his largest campaign contributor that is, Turf paradise), not the real threats to our society..see, i think that rapists, murderers, PEDOPHILES (like the one that his moronic employees let escape) are more of a threat than a man or woman that gets up and goes to work every day to make an honest buck...
also, unless you think its appropriate to hush critics by investigating and/or arresting them on charges that NEVER have stuck, then you should rethink your opinion..if you do support that, well your nothing more than a right wing fascist and your view of patriotism is seriously flawed....

New Times has treated Sheriff Joe, as they say (by the here-say of the Sanchez family) he treats these people of Guadalupe, for FAR longer then he has supposedly treated these residents of Guadalupe. YEARS of "tailing" him around, "to harass" him on his every move, for simply doing the JOB, he was elected to do.
Looking at the most recent STATS, on Joe's website, I would say this man is doing our County a GREAT Service...please see below;
Under the State law - Illegal Immigration Stats to Date
*Arrests by Sheriffs deputies of persons transporting or being transported illegally into Arizona: 1,250
Under the Federal law
*Arrests by Sheriffs deputies who, in the course of their duties, determine the arrestee is in Arizona illegally: 1,582
ICE Holds
Each inmate booked is interviewed for immigration status. Sheriffs detention officers have turned over 22,616 illegal immigrants to Immigration authorities for deportation.
THIS IS JUST MARICOPA COUNTY!
Maybe New Times should take the time and run an article about the HARM, done in our county by "illegal immigrants" in contras, to this one?
Instead of Hindering him and his men from doing their JOB, maybe try to help him? I have worked with a froup now for 2 years, aiding Joe and his wonderful mem with this immagration problem. It is HERENDOUS and needs to be given the attention required to deal with it.
I would never condone "Profiling", but where are we to look for illegal immagrants, in Plush, downtown apts? 90% of the illegal immagrants in this country are of Mexican origin, however, Tent City has illegals of many "origins: not just Mexican.
If you break the law, he is in his "RIGHT" to pull you over, wether that be a broken tail light, speeding or other VILOLATIONS. He is ALSO, within his RIGHT, to check the immagration status of those he does pull over - PERIOD.
Good article New Times, Now I would enjoy seeing one from the OTHER POINT OF VIEW!

I still would like an explaination why it's appropriate for the deputies to wear balaclavas. They're not undercover. Just disguises should be forbidden unless authorized by staff and there should be a reason for it. They are civil servants, and serve the public.
-
Minnesota Slim 03/18/2009 8:27:00 PM
Sheriff Arpio is not only doing an outstanding job for the people of Maricopa County, the rest of the country owes him a debt of gratitude for keeping hordes of illegals from making it past the AZ state line.
It's telling that the only people that are criticizing him are America hating leftists and the illegals themselves.
Good on ya, Sheriff Joe!

If it wasn't for the grand standing of illegal immigration that Bozo Joe is doing currently, he would be still be as corrupt as ever, as he has been for the last 10 years, long before he jumped on the illegal immigration band wagon.
The fact is pro Bozo Joe supporters can't see the forest through the trees and think it's ok to be corrupt as long as you pander to the immigration situation.
According to them, it's ok to break the law to enforce the law no matter how corrupt Bozo Joe is in 99.% of everything else Bozo Joe does.
As Lisa Allen once said, only the uneducated vote for Bozo Joe.
The post by Pro Bozo Joe supporters prove this over and over.

first, great article, very candid and pointed. its too bad that the ignorant masses cant pull their heads out of the sand long enough to just take a serious look at what goes on. Its not a secret, those that support him either dont want to face the facts and would rather champion some conspiracy theory rather than accept it, or just flat out are too lazy to take the time to know. I talk to the latter usually, and they have such a hard time believing the facts i lay out to them they THEN go and look at it.
This is pure abuse of power, and as im sure your going to continue to detail in future reports, this is not an isolated incident. Its the norm for MCSO and joe, almost like a daily fix of herion for them like a junkie. Its appalling, ludacris, and has no place in America. That said i know it happens all over, but not from someone who constantly demands the spotlight be on them...well there is Robert Mugabe, and there once was Hitler....
Its rather shocking though that the pro joe crowd are actually upset that the justice department is doing what it needs to do to protect EVERYONEs rights, not just illegals. The ignorant need to comprehend that if its allowed just once, it WILL continue, it wont just stop there. History has showed us this fact. I hold out hope for the future, and that doesnt just mean im happy joe could be arrested because frankly i dont think it will ever happen. It will however make him check his ego at the door, and it should scare him straight..that is if he continues to want to be a top law enforcement official. let me repeat that for you joe, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL. That doesnt say POLITICAL OFFICIAL anywhere...Law enforcement doesnt mean you enforce the laws you want. Law enforcement doesnt mean you interpret the law as you see fit, or manipulate it for personal gains. its to be followed to the T, no if, ands, or buts about it. My feeling is if they cant do it without playing politics, dont do it at all. The job is law enforcement, and no matter how many times the pro joe crowd keeps screaming "hes just enforcing the law" its not going to make it the truth until he ACTUALLY follows through on it.
And lets be honest, MCSO let someone escape from their custody that is far more criminal than anyone they have apprehended during joes tenure. His MO at the DEA was the easy arrests, hence the name Nickel bag. That MO seems to have followed him to MCSO. Why else would he send 60 deputies to arrest 3 janitors? is that a wise use of resources, paying how much overtime in these tough economic times to arrest 3 people they could have done anytime? Was Swat gear really needed to apprehend these hardened criminals?
Heres one for you, how many lives could have been saved if MCSO had put due dilligence and effort into tracking and arresting the Serial shooters had they not been so busy getting fkd and blown by prostitutes they were supposed to be getting evidence on to make arrests? And why did all those cases get tossed again???
i look forward to the upcoming stories Mr Lacy..and thanks for your courage and Patriotism in the face of adversity!!

Johnny Come Lately 03/16/2009 5:26:00 PM
Mr. Lacey, don't blame me for this. I'm just copying and pasting what they sent me. Sincerely, Big "O."
So now Johnny O'Sullivan goes by a new nickname, the Big "O"? Would that stand for orgasm, like the one you have in your pants every time you post and see your name in print? You are a fucking slimeball disgrace to Irishmen everywhere! Your posts are nonsensical, off topic ramblings that expose your idiocy and self serving motives.
Global Equity is merely a false front for some poor shmuck's beef with local law enforcement. What, did they pass you up for that promotion? No wonder, considering the lack of intelligence displayed in your diatribes in this forum.
Johnny, you make yourself such an easy target, you cabbage eatin', potato peelin', whiskey swillin' gas bag! Do the world a favor and put a round in the .38 caliber toothbrush. Put that old service revolver to good use one last time.

I still find it amazing that Trent even said that bullshit.
If Trend had any brains he'd know the 44 million Bozo Joe has cost Maricopa County tax payers, all the deaths in Maricopa County Jails, the continual Constitutional abuses and everything else Bozo Joe does and hides from public view is NOT protecting the citizens of Maricopa County.
Trend is just another worthless bullshit politician to dumb to be anything else but a politician..

The Freedom Bell doesn't ring 03/16/2009 1:31:00 AM
Trent Franks stood on the Biltmore stage during the McCain concession speech with wrapped in the American flag expounding Freedom for all in America. Unfortunately it was polltical rhetoric that sounds good, fools the people but the reality of life in Arizona is that few are "Free".

I think it's interesting that Good 'Ol Boy Trent Franks says that in the article posted above (thanks Coz) because it was Trent Franks that wrote a letter denouncing the picking up of religious leaders that were praying in Spanish out in the forest for a religious retreat.
So let me get this straight, Trent: It's ok to pick up folks perceived to be illegal and perception comes from the language they're speaking, the music they listen to or the color of their skin. But if they're religious and the churches are upset, then write a letter standing up for them??? Give me a f... break. You're a two-faced hypocrite.

Feds' new tone puts Arpaio in hot seat
D.C. leaders now more likely to hear profiling complaints
by Dan Nowicki - Mar. 15, 2009 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic
Few are feeling the change that President Barack Obama has brought to Washington more acutely than Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Not yet two months into the Obama administration, the veteran Republican lawman finds himself under investigation by the Justice Department following complaints that his office employs unconstitutional practices in enforcing immigration laws. On Capitol Hill, a high-profile congressional committee is preparing to hold an investigative hearing into whether Arpaio's operation discriminates against Latinos. And, based at least partly on Arpaio's record, the Homeland Security Department is revising the rules of the federal program, known as 287(g), that gives federal immigration-enforcement authority to Arpaio and other local officials around the country.
The controversial and popular five-term sheriff chalks the probes up to politics. But others say a renewed focus on civil rights has prompted the scrutiny.
Attorney General Eric Holder made it clear in his Senate confirmation hearing that he intended to make safeguarding civil rights a priority again. Holder's previous tenure at the Justice Department, as a deputy attorney general during President Bill Clinton's administration, was marked by a keen attention to police racial-profiling complaints.
Racial-profiling complaints were virtually ignored during President George W. Bush's eight-year term. And the Justice Department's inspector general recently blistered the Civil Rights Division for the unlawful politicization of personnel actions during the Bush era. Laura Sweeney, a Justice Department spokeswoman, declined to characterize the Arpaio inquiry as the administration's first major probe, saying that would be "a bit subjective." She confirmed that the Civil Rights Division has opened other investigations since Holder took office.
"Both in tone and in content, the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division has changed dramatically," said Paul Charlton, who was U.S. attorney for Arizona from 2001 to 2006 and now represents Maricopa County Supervisor Don Stapley in a criminal case brought by Arpaio and Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas. Stapley maintains he is innocent of the charges, which relate to real-estate and business deals that prosecutors allege were not properly disclosed.
One outside expert doubted that Arpaio is the victim of political persecution by the Civil Rights Division, particularly in light of the report that exposed politics-related abuses in the Bush Justice Department. The findings, based on a joint investigation by the department's Office of the Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility, were made public in January.
"There is an increased sensitivity to wanting to have a Civil Rights Division that is active but not politically influenced," said Rebecca Lonergan, a former assistant U.S. attorney and Justice Department insider who is now an adjunct assistant professor at the University of Southern California's Gould School of Law. "I do not believe that they would be dumb enough to open this investigation as a political decision. It would be extremely bad timing."
A political target?
Critics of Arpaio and his illegal- immigration-related crime-suppression sweeps and workplace raids are cheering the shift in the political winds.
"Our sense is that finally - finally - there is reception in Washington," said Monica Sandschafer, state director of Arizona ACORN, a chapter of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. "Finally there is an administration that is interested in holding people accountable for the Constitution and the rule of law."
But Arpaio suggests he is a political target of Democrats, saying that by vilifying him as a racial profiler, they are trying to achieve a larger goal of scrapping or radically altering the 287(g) program. The program was created under Clinton but wasn't promoted until after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, during the Bush administration.
The Democratic Obama administration, Arpaio said, gives new clout to the sheriff's political foes such as Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, who nearly a year ago asked for a federal probe of the sheriff, and Maricopa County Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox. Obama's Homeland Security secretary is Janet Napolitano, who, even if not directly involved, can provide the Justice Department with valuable institutional knowledge about Arpaio based on her experience working with him in Arizona in her previous roles as U.S. attorney, state attorney general and governor.
It's understandable that the Justice Department is feeling pressure from the various politicians clamoring for action, Arpaio said.
"Everyone who is making an issue is a Democrat," Arpaio said. "The big problem is the 287(g). I'm the most active (participant), the largest with 160 officers, and they're using me as a poster boy.
"They're using me as a catalyst to make an issue of this, hoping that they can get something on me and my deputies on racial profiling so they can say, 'See what happens under 287(g).' "
Arpaio also is drawing criticism from the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee, where partisanship often flares. But here, too, observers say Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich., the panel's chairman, is motivated by a long-term commitment to civil rights. Conyers, like Holder, is Black.
"I don't think you can discount the importance of race here. Conyers is an old civil-rights veteran," said Rodolfo Espino, an assistant political science professor at Arizona State University. "You have two African-Americans looking at this who are very cognizant of civil rights and what African-Americans went through."
Hearing in April
Sandschafer and Alicia Navejar, another Arizona ACORN leader and Arpaio critic, were in Washington on Wednesday as Conyers announced that he will hold a hearing on Arpaio in April. The development came the day after the Justice Department probe was revealed. Conyers previously had urged Holder and Napolitano to investigate Arpaio.
Navejar was energized after speaking at the Conyers news conference, saying she hopes Arpaio is "taken to justice."
"I was just so excited to be part of something that is going to make a difference to not only just one person or two people but to thousands of lives," said Navejar, a naturalized U.S. citizen who lives in Phoenix. "I can see what it has done (to Latino families)."
Yet Arpaio's immigration crackdowns are wildly popular, and he was re-elected in November by a wide margin.
Rep. Trent Franks, R-Ariz., a Judiciary Committee member, worries that hearings will exploit racial fears for partisan political gain.
"I think they would like to try to paint all Republicans as racist and motivated by things like racial profiling," Franks said. "I have not seen one iota of evidence that the sheriff has done anything but enforce the law on the basis that he is trying to protect the people within the county he serves."
Franks echoed Arpaio's suggestion that the 287(g) program is a target. "A big goal of the liberal Democrats in Congress is to try to do away with any effective cooperation to enforce federal immigration laws," he said.

Mr. Lacey, don't blame me for this. I'm just copying and pasting what they sent me. Sincerely, Big "O."
Let it rip:
"Lacey, are you still fuming over your rightful arrest and five minute detention after you threatened Sheriff Arpaio's life by publishing his home address on your front page?
Your "cause" has lousy lawyers, too. The Melendres v. Arpaio "racial-profiling" case only protects brown-skinned LATINOS under certain limited circumstances in Phoenix. We really would like to see the Sanchezes get protection IF there really is any profiling, but your racist Mexican-centric abogados/abogadas are too stupid to argue a valid case.
We can see right through you, old man. A little broke suck-ass who's in the pockets of the cartels, human smugglers, and Carlos Slim.
Pathetic, Lace Man."
Man, these people really are after Mr. Lacey. I never had any real issues with what he writes, despite some political/legal disagreements.

Thanks for 15 years of courageous reporting on Arpaio's abuses. Never in 15 years has there been this much organized resistance against this gangster. One can say with absolute certainty that the flames of resistance have only begun to burn. Those of us that actively resist and oppose Arpaio will not stop with the DOJ's slapping of his wrist or the removal of 287(g). This isn't over until its over and it's just begun.

Arpaio right now is only the ARM. But don't forget that a state senator and the neo-nazis groups are the BRAIN.

Arpaio is a pussy who breaks women's arms and only picks fights in backward states like Arizona. I find it annoying that all these browns are scared of this pussy. I am brown and I am not scared at all of that linguini eating, garlic bread breath having, idiot. I mean this guy's family immigrated from the country that is mostly all criminals who spend their days beating on women, eating noodles, and figuring out ways to scam people. So who is he to get all angry at hispanics who actually work hard in this country rather than just eating spaghetti and beating people with bats. Hopefully Obama will get rid of Arpigio. I am sick of Eurotrash immigrants from the ghettos of Europe coming to America, having kids, and then having them grow up thinking that they're better than the new immigrants.
