If you were a club kid or music fan back in 1995, chances are you might have heard about a swanky little soiree called The Hip Joint. Seeping with style, the fly fete went down weekly during the middle of the Clinton era at bygone venues like Jamaican Blue in Scottsdale. Turntablists such as DJ Essential and German-born DJ Pari weaved a mix of old-school soul, funk, and jazz jams with house and hip-hop tracks. Local painter Luis Gutierrez, who organized the Hip Joint back in the day, decided to resurrect the event at BoHo eatery Paisley Violin, 1030 Grand Avenue, and is bringing together his old friends for the occasion on Saturday, April 4. Besides Essential and Pari (who now lives in Virginia), Gutierrez has booked local wax workers Meaty Ogre, Earwig, and STLB3, as well as Florida's DJ Finesse. The menu for the evening? "Hot funk, cool jazz, spicy Latin, folk funk, and rare groove." Sounds delish. The party starts at 10 p.m. and admission is $5. Visit www.myspace.com/hipjointaz.
