Fun With Goth

Theatrical act is like a goofball version of Dresden Dolls

Listening to Cuba-born, New York-based musician Voltaire may evoke a night aboard an 18th-century frigate, complete with freely flowing wine and bawdy, drunken sing-alongs. For others, his music, with its organic instrumentation (clarinet, trumpet, accordion, cello), might call to mind a dark Berlin cabaret, full of gothic theatricality – sorta like a goofball version of Dresden Dolls or Tom Waits had Waits cut his teeth on comic books instead of bourbon.

The lightheartedly macabre (new genre: fun goth?) musician/graphic novelist/creator of the vinyl toy Deady will whip up some horror-fied high jinks when he and his seven-man band, Voltaire and the Skeletal Orchestra, perform at Club Mardi Gras & Voodoo Lounge. Along with gypsy pirate garb, expect to hear Voltaire perform “BRAINS!,” the song that put him on the map because of its appearance on the Cartoon Network series The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy.
