John Melendez, known for years as “Stuttering John” on The Howard Stern Show, is the kind of comedian you would expect to rely on pure shock value. But rather than bragging about pushing the envelope, Melendez instead talks about the struggles that inspired his comedy. “I always wanted to do stand-up even when I was in college, but I avoided it because I stuttered,” Melendez tells New Times. And while his act touches on his time with Stern, Melendez refuses to sell himself as “Stuttering John,” even though “there were times [that] people would get angry at me because I wasn’t stuttering.”
