Lisa See

L.A.-based See is the daughter of writer Carolyn See (Dreaming: Hard Luck and Good Times in America) and a relative of Chinese immigrants who came here to work on the transcontinental railroad. Her novels -- like Flower Net, Dragon Bones, and Peony in Love -- are deep with her half-Chinese ancestry, as is her latest, Shanghai Girls, which deals with arranged marriage and anti-Communism in 1950s Los Angeles.
