World-class soccer in the desert? It’s rare, but it’s here.

Arizona sports fans, like all desert species, know how to make due. Said another way, we’re adapted to savor every major athletic event, because there’s no telling when the next one will come. That’s why we know you’ll be in Glendale when University of Phoenix Stadium hosts preliminary rounds for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Sure, it’s disappointing that the surging U.S. men’s team is playing elsewhere, but for soccer fans in Arizona, the two featured matches – a 2 p.m. contest between Central American arch rivals Panama and Nicaragua, followed immediately by a tilt between Mexico and Guadeloupe – figure to be the only world-class soccer you’ll see in person all year.
