Grey’s Anatomy consultant relates kooky surgical tales

In the chilling/moving 2005 Grey’s Anatomy episode Into You Like a Train, two people are impaled by a metal pole after one of Grey’s typically gnarly accidents. Ironically, the pole is keeping them alive and coherent. Removing it will kill them. While medical soaps are typically a slim step above their daytime kin in our book, this one made us cringe, and think, and wonder: Where the hell do they come up with this shit?

A prime source is people like Allan J. Hamilton, a professor of neurosurgery at the University of Arizona and a medical consultant to Grey’s. The good doc has seen a lot of kooky-ass things in his day, and many made it into his 2008 book The Scalpel and the Soul: Encounters with Surgery, the Supernatural, and the Healing Power of Hope, which Hamilton signs and discusses at the Barnes & Noble at 10500 North 90th Street in Scottsdale.

Want kookier? His next project, we hear, is about spirituality and horsemanship.
