Road to Perdition

Or Canada – whichever comes first

It’s a road movie, but it isn’t your typical road movie. In fact, it makes Easy Rider look like a spin around the block. Directed by Arturo Perez Torres, Wetback: The Undocumented Documentary traces the trek of two determined immigrants across Latin America and the North American continent, all in hopes of a better standard of living.

Here in the Southwest, we often automatically think of undocumented aliens as Mexican, and imagine them coming as far as Tucson or Phoenix to bus tables in restaurants or clean floors in office buildings. This film offers a different angle. The protagonists of Wetback, “Nayo” and “Milton,” set out from Chinandega, Nicaragua, and cross Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, and the U.S., with Canada as their ultimate destination. This odyssey’s hardships and perils begin long before the pair ever reaches the U.S. border, and they certainly don’t end there.
