Blue Period

Pushing porn – for purely academic purposes

Her name may sound cute and innocent, but Phoenix artist Alison Sweet admits she likes porn. Don’t expect to find her surfing the Net for wet hunks or busty babes, though. Sweet’s interest is purely academic. Her artwork features old 16mm filmstrips illuminated in wall-mounted light boxes – and, as Sweet points out, some of the most interesting images come from ‘70s “blue” movies. “I find it to be a rather fascinating aspect of our culture,” Sweet tells New Times. “Pornography, in various forms, has always been around and yet, as a culture, we kind of sweep it under the rug along with our own sexuality.”
