Bomb Squad

Palestinian flick explores the mind of the martyr

Hany Abu-Assad’s tense, well-acted 2005 drama concerns two young men from the West Bank struggling with whether to carry out a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv. When it became the first Palestinian movie to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, it stirred up controversy both for its humanizing portrait of potential terrorists and for Oscar’s apparent implication that Palestine was a country.
