Critically acclaimed play showcases real-life Internet depravity

The good news is that the theater season has officially commenced. The better news is that Stray Cat Theatre is kicking things off with David Harrower’s controversial Blackbird, recipient of the 2007 Olivier Award for Best New Play and featured on many American and London theater critics’ Top 10 lists. The truly magnificent news is that this volatile piece of theater will be directed by Stray Cat founder Ron May, no slouch in the directoral chair.

Based on a much-publicized true story about a guy who hooks up with an Internet pal even though he knows she’s under the legal age of consent, Blackbird showcases all that’s wrong with the virtual world we’ve come to live in. Warnings in Stray Cat’s media releases about “strong adult language and material” suggest a grown-up night of fun for thoughtful theatergoers.

Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m.; Thursdays, 8 p.m. Starts: Sept. 25. Continues through Oct. 8, 2009
