The word hero is too often bandied about, but when distinguished author Jon Krakauer (Into the Wild, Into Thin Air) writes a book about Pat Tillman and refers to him as a war hero, one takes notice. In Krakauers new book, Where Men Win Glory, the author draws on the late ASU and Arizona Cardinals players journals and letters, as well as interviews with Tillmans wife and friends, to piece together the details of a story that was deliberately kept from Americans by our government: that Tillmans death on a desolate hillside in southeastern Afghanistan came as a result of friendly fire by his own comrades. Krakauer spares no detail about Tillman, a complicated young do-gooder who walked away from a multi-million dollar pro-football contract to enlist in the Army after the September 11 attacks.
