Best Fiends Forever

Supersnarky C.S. Lewis translation hits the Herberger

You think you know some scary people, but you haven’t met Screwtape. He and his nasty nephew -- both demons in the literal sense -- are out to get our hero, a fellow known only as The Patient, in Jeffrey Finske and Max McLean’s funny, supersnarky translation of C.S. Lewis’s epistolary novel The Screwtape Letters. Both are about spiritual warfare as seen from a demon's point of view, but the theatrical adaptation -- starring McLean as Screwtape, and having wowed audiences in New York, Washington, D.C., and Chicago -- is doing for demonic possession in the theater what Paranormal Activity is doing for cinema fans this Halloween season.

Screwtape and company, brought here by the Fellowship for the Performing Arts and Aruba Productions, will haunt Herberger Theater Center for four performances Friday, October 30, through Sunday, November 1.

Fri., Oct. 30, 8 p.m.; Sat., Oct. 31, 4 & 8 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 1, 3 p.m., 2009
