Luis Daniel Gutierrez went through a lot this summer. For one, he’s a starving artist just trying to make ends meet. But that’s no biggie considering that his sister was murdered a few months back. Instead of harping on the tough times, he decided to lighten things up a bit for his next big exhibit, which opens with a First Friday reception at Portland’s Restaurant.

About the show, the Phoenix-based painter – who visually keeps things light while creating thematic pensiveness – says, “I have made a bunch of prayer flags in the tradition of Buddhist prayer flags with a contemporary twist,” says Gutierrez. “This will be a fun and very colorful exhibition.”
