Doggie dress-up artist makes a rare public appearance

If PETA really wants to stop cruelty to animals, the organization should go after dog owners who shove their poor pooches in purses or dress them in humiliating outfits. Pink sweaters? Bumblebee Halloween costumes? It’s the canine equivalent of sending your kid to school in suspenders and ankle waders.

According to photographer William Wegman, dogs love playing dress-up -- at least, his Weimaraner “models” do. "I think of myself as an artist who draws and paints and takes photographs, sometimes with dogs. They want the attention," Wegman said in a video by Kimberly M. Wang of Eardog Productions. "They want to be looked at; they want to be chosen. They want to be elevated."

The internationally known artist makes a rare public appearance to discuss his work at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in conjunction with the “Unexpected Wegman” installation at nearby Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
