Wayne "The Train" Hancock

I'd wager Wayne "The Train" Hancock drools when he looks at the calendar and discovers it's a leap year, meaning he can tour 366 days instead of the usual 365. Okay, that's an exaggeration, but really not much of one, as the 44-year-old Austin singer-songwriter and guitarist has made the road his home for the past 15 years. If Hancock's a throwback to the old days when musicians would forever wander from city to city and town to town to get their music heard, his tunes come from a different era as well — foot-stompin' concoctions that draw from vintage honky-tonk, roadhouse boogie-blues, Western swing, and rockabilly traditions. Hancock's nasal twang will surely remind you of Hank Williams, more so even than Hank's actual descendents, Junior and Hank III. And all that touring has made the man and his three-piece backing band tighter than the bark on a tree. I suppose Hancock peels himself off the road long enough to make albums such as his recent Viper of Melody, but then it's right back to playing live for the people, and we're all the better for it.
