Garrison Keillor makes long-in-the-tooth laughs

Like Two and a Half Men (first airdate: 2003), “Weird Al” Yankovic (debut record: 1984), and kicks to the groin (um, forever), some forms of entertainment have been around a lot longer than you’d think. And though their debatably humorous offerings are predictable, there’s a comfort in knowing what to expect.

Maybe that’s the secret to Garrison Keillor’s staying power. Hailing from Anoka, Minnesota (fun to say), Keillor, 67, is best known as the hypno-throated host of Minnesota Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. The old-timey variety show features Keillor’s specialty, a weekly stand-up bit titled “The News from Lake Wobegon” (a fictional small town in Minnesota), performed before a live audience.

These days, the three-time-married monologist and face-made-for-radio personality is lulling folks into complacency with tales of growing up in the Midwest, the people of Lake Wobegon, late-life fatherhood, and more.

Catch Keillor for a one-night-only engagement of hometown humor.
