Sympathy for the Devils

ASU Baseball’s new season opens with more questions than answers

The old bread and butter of hometown collegiate athletics, the ASU Baseball team, are in a wee bit of trouble. The defending three-time Pac-10 champions canned its head skipper, Pat Murphy, after fourteen successful seasons. And now, Tim Esmay (a man with limited head coaching experience) steps in. Yikes.

Despite the uncertainty, the Devils have retained pitching stars Josh Spence and Mitchell Lambson and were picked to win the Pac-10 by the conference’s coaches. Wishful thinking? Judge for yourself when they open the 2010 season with a game series against the Northern Illinois Huskies.
