Film documents plenty of ‘80s flash

We laud Lady Gaga for bringing back a sense of show-person-ship that turns award-show snooze fests into something watchable. When people suggest that she's doing something revolutionary, though, we think, fiddlesticks! Instead, we feel that Gaga would have fit perfectly in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s New York club scene that spawned Kid Creole and The Coconuts.

The funky band's multicultural music life flashes before your eyes during a screening of Kid Creole and My Coconuts. Here’s the scoop on the band: Adriana Kaegi was the wife of August "Kid Creole" Darnell and, with her choreography and costume designs, the Mama Coconut of the backup singers. Darnell envisioned Kid Creole and The Coconuts as a tropical-tinged, big-band carnival with himself in the Cab Calloway role. Kaegi had the foresight to document the band's travels throughout the ‘80s and after the film screening she will be on-hand for a Q&A.
