Radical Chinese feminism documentary schools ASU

Quick. Name a radical feminist from China.

Huh?

That’s what San Francisco-based independent filmmaker Rae Chang thought when she discovered China’s first feminist, Qiu Jin. Thinking that more people should know about this “Chinese Joan of Arc” and her remarkable life, Chang quit her day job, joined forces with husband Adam Tow, and spent $50,000 to produce the hour-long documentary Autumn Gem.

The film shares the story of Qiu Jin (1875-1907), an accomplished writer, women’s rights activist, and leader of a revolutionary army. Filmed in the U.S. and China – and starring former Chinese National Wushu Champion and Hollywood stunt actress Li JingAutumn Gem explores the life and work of this unsung revolutionary through scholar interviews, archival materials, and dramatic re-creations based on Qui Jin’s original writings.

See the free screening of Autumn Gem and be sure to stick around - the filmmakers will be available for a Q&A session after the flick.
