Superstar Power

The Lord singeth and danceth

Just in time for Easter, everybody’s favorite rock opera about the political and personal struggles of Judas Iscariot is back in town. Jesus Christ Superstar is based on the gospel of St. John, and focuses primarily on the last week of Jesus’ life. And while we all know how that story ends, it’s nice to watch it all unfold again to the tunes of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s best-known score.

And that Judas! Never before has an unsympathetic character been so neatly transformed into a tragic figure -- and in such a nice dressing gown, too. As reimagined by Tim Rice, Jesus’ former BFF is more than just jealous and scheming; he’s bummed out by Christ’s lousy organizational skills, besides.

This touring version of the musical stars the 20th century’s most famous Jesus, Ted Neeley, who played the role in the popular 1973 film version.
