Honor Thy Father: The Inside Story of the Young Muslim Woman "Honor-Killed" by Her Father Because He Believed She'd Become Too Americanized

Noor Almaleki typed a text message to a friend.

Noor Almaleki was a 20-year-old college student who had dreams of becoming a fashion model.
Noor Almaleki was a 20-year-old college student who had dreams of becoming a fashion model.
Noor Almaleki's dad, murder suspect Faleh Almaleki, in a police mugshot taken after his arrest last October.
Noor Almaleki's dad, murder suspect Faleh Almaleki, in a police mugshot taken after his arrest last October.

"Dude," she wrote at 1:06 p.m. last October 20, "my dad is here at the welfare office."

Noor, 20, hadn't seen her father, Faleh, since moving out of the family home in Glendale months earlier.

His presence both startled and alarmed her. She knew he wouldn't rest until he'd regained complete control of her life.

Noor was the firstborn of Faleh and Seham Almaleki's seven children. Her first name means "light of God."

The Almalekis had moved to the United States from Iraq when Noor was 4.

Noor was thoroughly assimilated into American culture but kept in touch with her Iraqi roots (she was fluent in Arabic) and considered herself a Muslim, the same religion as her parents.

But she had moved away from her parents in early 2009 (not for the first time) after another blowup over how she was living her life — tight jeans, makeup, boyfriends, modeling photos, and an attitude that screamed independence and self-determination.

The clashes escalated in 2008 after Noor, then 18, left her marriage to an older cousin in Iraq — her father had "arranged" it — and returned to the Phoenix area.

Noor sent her text message from inside an Arizona Department of Economic Security office in Peoria. Seated next to her was Amal Edan Khalaf, her latest boyfriend's 43-year-old mother.

Amal was there to complete a change-of-address form for welfare benefits. She, too, is Iraqi by birth but moved to the States only about a decade ago, and her proficiency in English was such that Noor came along to help translate.

Noor had lived at Amal's residence since leaving her parents' home after the latest fracas.

It was bad enough that she was staying with Amal, whom Faleh and his wife, Seham, had known for years and considered unfit as a mother and wife (she was separated from her husband at the time).

Noor's boyfriend, Amal's 19-year-old son, Marwan Alebadi, also lived there, and the Almalekis — particularly Noor's father — were enraged and shamed by the situation.

From their perspective, a man's daughters are his property, and they must live with him until he decides otherwise.

Females who stray from the fold — or are perceived to have strayed — are considered guilty of dishonoring their clans. To Faleh Almaleki, there was nothing worse.

The alleged wrongdoing often revolves around sexual "immorality," but not always.

Riffat Hassan, a retired University of Louisville professor and expert on the Koran, writes, "Muslim culture has reduced many, if not most, women to the position of puppets on a string, to slave-like creatures whose only purpose in life is to cater to the needs and pleasures of men."

The Almalekis were proud members of that "Muslim culture."

By moving in with Marwan and Amal, Noor Almaleki had made it clear that she would not be her father's puppet, his "slave-like" creature.

She was determined to live how, and with whom, she wished.

Some cultures, including the Almalekis', endorse ancient methods of "cleansing" a family's supposedly tarnished name — with the blood of its daughters, sisters, and wives.

In India, Hindu and Sikh brides are sometimes slain because their dowries are considered inadequate, the U.N. Children's Fund reports.

In Islamic Middle Eastern countries, there's a name for the homicides of women by male family members: "honor killings."

These murders of loved ones often are committed with knives, machetes, or bare hands.

Victims have been tied up and buried alive. According to news accounts, the father and grandfather of a 16-year-old Islamic girl in Turkey did just that a few months ago after someone reported seeing her talking with boys.

No one can say exactly how many "honor killings" occur, but anecdotal evidence (from media accounts and government data) suggests that hundreds of Muslim women and girls die this way every year.

According to a 2006 statement by a U.N. news agency, 47 women died in "honor killings" in 2006 in Basra, a seaport city of about four million people that is Faleh Almaleki's hometown.

Such killings by Muslim immigrant men are reported in Western nations, as well: Five were accused of murdering female kin in the United States from the start of 2008 until October 20, 2009.

That was the day Faleh Almaleki, an unemployed 48-year-old trucker with no criminal record, took a grim step toward adding himself to that list of accused "honor" murderers.

Noor sent a second text message after her father stepped into the DES office, this one to her best friend, Ushna Khan.

"Dude, I'm so scared. Shit," she wrote. "At the welfare place, and guess who walks in? My dad!!! I'm so shaky!"

"Holy shit, did he see you?" Ushna quickly responded.

"I don't think so," Noor typed. "His fat ass is right by the door so I can't even leave. I'm laughing like a crazy person. I hate when this happens to me. I knew I shouldn't have [woken] up."

"Oh dear, that's awkward," Ushna said. "What's up with your parents, anyway?"

"My dad is a manipulative asshole," Noor replied. "I've honestly never met anyone . . . so evil."

Amal Khalaf watched as Faleh took a number at the counter and then sat near her and Noor.

"Honor Killing" is the literal translation of what this crime is called in the middle east. Usually people like Faleh would get away with it, because it is not considered a crime! It is the only solution to "wash off the stain of disgrace". I blame the western countries for letting these people in. They're like Cancer!

  • EllCee 09/24/2011 4:58:00 PM

For some reason a lot of the comments made here, while they show up in my in box do not show up here. What ever the basis is you think is justification for using the term "Honor Killing" what ever you think are circumstances the justify "Honor Killing" the majority of the world disagrees with you. It is not justice, it is not "Honorable" not in any circumstance. Not when it has been deemed due process for some unfortunate soul by the laws in place or by their family. Not because a person chose to leave their faith, not because a woman was raped, not because they refused arranged marriage, not because they are adulterers, not because they engaged in premarital relations or any of the other onslaught of reasons appointed by people as justification for taking another life. None of it is Honorable. No matter what anyone calls it. I do not hate you, but I do disagree with you and I do implore you to listen to your heart on such matters, certainly you are capable of feeling such a thing is wrong. We are all made with this basic instinct to lead us away from harming others. Or I should say "most" there are those who are ill of heart and mind and are incapable of feeling this sense.

  • Kcarson 09/24/2011 3:23:00 AM

Mr Rubin - this is what your writing endorses. How much hate do you have in your heart that this is the trash you want for your fanbase?

  • Kcarson 09/24/2011 3:22:00 AM

At the conclusion of the trial the judge blasted the media - Paul Rubin included therein - for their use of the anti-Muslim, anti-Islam slur "honor killing." In chiding Mr. Rubin and his cohorts, the judge noted that how dispicable use of that slur certainly was. When a hillbilly kills his daughter for dating a black guy, do we call that an honor killing? When the Chinese father kills because his daughter wants to marry a Christian, what lable do we give that? Honor killing has a defined meaning, and this was no honor killing. There was no permission granted by a authority and it was in opposite local religious standards. This was just a sick, criminal dad killing his lovely daughter. It was just easier to get readers by using a slur than to report honestly.

Dear Mom, Thank you so much for your comment above. I am sure you love your beautiful daughter and am glad you wrote to me. May your life be filled with much happiness. And much love to your daughter. It is wonderful when something good comes out of something that is so terribly sad.

  • Mom 09/05/2011 7:53:00 PM

Noor's death was not in vain. I know several young girls who were in danger of a similar fate. As this horrible story unfolded, their Muslim fathers were forced to pause and reconsider their threats...Waiting to see the reactions of officials and their community. Their warped definition of "accountability" was forced into question, if only on the subconscious level. Instead of cowering in fear of meeting the same fate, these girls seized the moment and said, "No! I will not live in fear." One of these girls was my beautiful daughter. Thank you, Noor.

Dear Xandra: I was wrong about the man killing his 4 kids -- only 3 little ones; raped his wife and beat her with a hammer. The woman will never find any peace knowing he killed the children. And, no death penalty.

  • 04/22/2011 6:51:00 PM

Dear Xandra -- your comments are RIGHT ON THE MARK. Have you heard of the latest "honor killing" in another state? This one is so horrible: Man suspected his wife of cheating on him. He raped her and beat her with a hammer and then he murdered his 4 little children. The death penalty is "off the table." I believe this happened in Kentucky. I am sick of this behavior and am with you on this "piece of shit."

  • Xandra 04/22/2011 5:27:00 PM

If you're that upset about your "honor", old man, how well do you think the world thinks of you now? Now you're just the fat old bastard who killed his own daughter - a piece of shit if ever there was one. You should have killed yourself and spared the species.

  • 04/22/2011 7:53:00 AM

Call this girl's death whatever you wish. SHE IS DEAD. Her Father ran over her -- surely not "accidentally." And, he is getting sent to prison for the crime. End of story? I see in today's news that a 14-year old was lashed by a Cleric in Bangladesh for adultery with a married man. She died after 70 of the hundred lashes. Took her a week to die. Why didn't the article read: "Married man has sex with 14-year old?"

  • 04/22/2011 7:39:00 AM

this article is flawed greatly....this journalist needs to get his facts straight, what do you mean Noor's latest boyfriend? Noor never had a boyfriend....that man just happened to be the son of the lady she was living with. He was probably the closest thing to a boyfriend...and here you are talking about how she liked having boyfriends and that her latest one was Marwan?? And a best friend doesnt ask about their best friends parents years and years down the road. her best friend knew about her father and mother and brothers and sister. She didnt have to ask.."whats up with your parents, anyway?" I am just wasting my time defending Noor....those who knew her, know the truth and all that is what matters. Everyone else just wants something to read about or something to write. Great job at journalism...ASS.

  • 04/21/2011 8:27:00 PM

Well, I am presently in Paris and get my news from all over the world. Each site has called it an "honor killing." Can the entire world of news be "off base."????

  • Joe Franklin 04/21/2011 7:52:00 PM

It's written in the article that Riffat Hassan is an expert of the Koran, not Muslim Culture.

  • John Geshia 04/21/2011 7:50:00 PM

    wow... huh?

  • 04/16/2011 7:50:00 AM

I am Naoma. I have no prejudice.l Today he was sentenced to 34-1/2 years. I was using the terminology in the newspaper. It was called Honor Killing throughout the news. Presently I am in Paris and the news reached me over here -- for his sentence. I had read that the death penalty was "off the table" because it would inflame the Muslim community. Just quoting quotes.

  • Kit Carson 04/16/2011 1:59:00 AM

Rubin doesn't care that he is lying. He knows what an honor killing is, he knows this was not one. But when you're a hack in need of readers, and you know that anti-Muslim sentiment runs high, it's easier to slander a religion than do honest reporting. Is Rubin a racist, or simply one who knows the power of racism in gaining readers? I don't know and I don't care. It's repugnant behavior and is just the latest example of the decline of the New Times publications.

  • Kit Carson 04/16/2011 1:53:00 AM

    > Let's not coddle the Muslims. Ahhh, Mr. Rubin must be so happy and so proud upon reading this: it's exactly the sentiment he was shooting for. Rather than focus on the crime at hand, Rubin took the low-brow approach of using the tragedy to slime an entire community of religious faithful. At least Naoma has the courage to be forth coming about her prejudices, one has to wonder what kind of coward Rubin is that he has to resort to sophistry to subtly inject his hatred into our minds.

  • 02/08/2011 8:03:00 PM

Riffat Hassan is no expert on the Koran or "Muslim Culture". Honor killing is definetly against Islam, even if a woman is caught having sex before marriage by at least 4 different people the maximum punishment is whipping not capital punishment. Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states: “There is no such concept in Islam that is called “honor killing”. Islam holds every soul in high esteem and does not allow any transgression upon it. It does not allow people to take the law in their own hands and administer justice, because doing so will be leading to chaos and lawlessness. Therefore, based on this, Islam does not permit such killings. First of all, in order to sanction killing, it must be through a binding verdict issued by an authoritative law court. Individuals themselves have no authority either to judge cases or pass judgments. Therefore, a Muslim should not sanction such killing because doing so will be leading to the rule of the law of the jungle. A civilized society cannot be run by such laws.” Shedding more light on it, Sheikh `Atiyyah Saqr, former head of Al-Azhar Fatwa Committee, states: “Like all other religions, Islam strictly prohibits murder and killing without legal justification. Allah, Most High, says, “Whoso slayeth a believer of set purpose, his reward is Hell for ever. Allah is wroth against him and He hath cursed him and prepared for him an awful doom.” (An-Nisa’: 93) Read more: http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?pagename=IslamOnline-English-Ask_Scholar/FatwaE/FatwaE&cid=1119503543392#ixzz1DOq8XktW

  • Naoma 10/11/2010 4:47:00 PM

Why has this man not been brought to TRIAL? And, of course, the "death penalty" is off the table. Again why? Let us not coddle the Muslims! They live here -- OBEY OUR LAWS, or else!

  • ssk235 07/31/2010 7:43:00 AM

  • Naoma 07/22/2010 8:10:00 PM

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN THIS MAN WILL BE BROUGHT TO TRIAL? I HAVE ASKED THE COURTS AND THEY HAVE NO ANSWER? HE MUST BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. "HONOR KILLINGS" ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE USA!!!!!!!!

  • Kelley 04/23/2010 11:26:00 PM

If you don't want to be American yourself or for your children to be American, DON'T COME TO AMERICA!

  • teri 04/23/2010 10:45:00 PM

WTF ? You come to our country for what? So you can have our freedom but live by your rules? I spit on the aliens that come to our country for freedom and than when they break our laws they crawl back to their country and hide behind religion. Killing a person is a sin, but your own child? A perfect punishment to burn in hell.

  • Holden McGroyne 04/18/2010 12:25:00 AM

This is fairly typical thinking and rationale by most if not all Muslim males. Why did they bother coming to this country in the first place. Stay in the middle east, where you can put women to death for getting raped, and you can honor kill to your hearts content. Religion of peace my a$$. Go to the website www.thereligionofpeace.com. Muslims should not be allowed to emigrate to the US.

  • Cherry Picking Hypocrisy 04/16/2010 10:26:00 PM

Folks really let their hair down and share their bigotry here. What is the argument of the bulk of commentators here exactly? That Muslim immigrants are uniquely dangerous to "American values?" That Muslims are more inclined to commit homicides against women due to "honor" considerations? Seems to me, there is a problem with violence against women and girls in the world: and it is not unique to the Muslim world. I live in a country where 23 women are killed by men on average per week in domestic violence-homicides which we would call "honor killings" in any other context (that is, if the culprits religion was politically convenient to mention). And I live in the US.

Author did not mention religion a lot - only in strategic places such as headlines. Look at the comments it generated in St. Louis. My point is: why this story now? And Edna I am sorry but I do not value someone's comments more just because they put their name. The information in the comment is important, not who wrote it.

  • Patrick 04/08/2010 7:26:00 PM

I have not read all of the comments and this may have already been addressed. But I fill every one is missing the point here. You have an immigrant that came to this country to live the American Dream, he brought his entire family with him and than chose to leach off of our system by taking advantage of the Welfare system. Than has the nerve to say that his (poor) daughter is too "Americanized". Who the hell does he think he is? He brought his children here, he did not have to he could have stayed in his pathetic country where he came from and continued with what ever belief he chooses. Immigrants that come to our country "United States of American" should understand that they need to adjust to our ways, laws, beliefs, etc. Get a clew DAD and the rest of your family needs to wake up also. Oh by the way dont send Dad to jail just send him over to my drive way I have a real big SUV.

  • lady 04/06/2010 4:47:00 PM

    * Linda: The other children are still living with the mother! She is not an unfir mother. Do you know her or her children personally? Where you there to see her mother and family shed tears at her memorial!? No? Then how bout you stfu! Why should the other children be taken from her! That would only cause more stress to this already stressing family. They've even chosen to move away because they can't live here without being harassed. I loved Noor she was a beautiful person and amazing friend. I will never forget the times we shard togther. I hope her father gets what he deserves cause Noor sure didnt.

  • Linda 04/05/2010 10:16:00 PM

Are the other children still living with the mother who supports her husband murdering one of her children? I really hope they were removed from her home!

  • To No Name 04/04/2010 4:16:00 PM

Dear Anti-Propaganda: If you actually read the story you will see that the writer hardly mentioned the killer's religion. It was a very poignant story, and I really got a feeling about who Noor was, the poor girl. So happens that what are called honor killings are committed by Muslims. Not all Muslims, just fucked up Muslims like Faleh Almaleki. And, yes, Christians, Jews and what have you do terrible things to their kids. Obviously. By the way, I am a Muslim, born and raised here in the U.S. And I'm not afraid to print my name like you. It is Edna Houghton, and I live in Phoenix.

  • ANTI-PROPAGANDA 04/04/2010 3:25:00 PM

No one sees the big picture: what is the purpose of this article? Paul Rubin is spreading anti-Muslim propaganda and that is it. He doesn't care about Noor. His primary goal is to show that all Muslims are maniacs who kill their daughters. Why is there no label when similar crime occurs elsewhere? Why is not James Harrison who killed his 5 children because his wife left him labeled as christian? There is an underlying cause for this article to be published now. This is last yer's news. Why is it on the front page?

  • wherewasi 04/03/2010 8:17:00 PM

He runs her down in a strip mall parking lot driving an SUV and claims that SHE was too westernized? Since when was driving an SUV in a United States mall parking lot considered a traditional Muslim value? I try very hard not to be racist, but this 'way of thinking' among certain cultures makes me ill. Andrew Thomas is milktoast and has no spine. Glad he resigned and hope it was in order to try to gracefully slip out of the lime light of his recent political fiascos and not because he really thinks he could with the AG race.

  • Ben 04/03/2010 4:14:00 AM

I read the Article by Paul Rubin two more times. It will not go into my head how the whole family try to cover up the reason for killing Noor - giving OTHERS the blame - and try to hide it- "do this in front of the US embassy - and yes that's a good idea - I am sick in my mind - the war aso." And his wife lying to police. AZ make an example for Honor Killing - put them all in jail and the Killer for the rest of his shameful live till he dies!! In the USA we trial Honor killers - in any Muslim state - you go free! ( go back - to your country all of you ) and leave Noor in this USA earth - she is freer here - as in Irak!

  • Joe Curwen 04/02/2010 8:10:00 PM

I oppose the death penalty for Mr. Almaleki. Life without parole should be sufficient in any case. Any guesses as to how long he'll last in general population once his fellow inmates find out why he's in there? Often the worst parts of criminal sentences are the ones that aren't officially specified.

  • Karma's Hand 04/02/2010 3:55:00 PM

I must also point out that he blames his actions on his daugther becoming "americanized"!! Hey, HE MOVED HIS FAMILY HERE!! If you don't like America, then don't move here. Why would you complain about the culture of a place YOU moved to!?!

  • Karma's Hand 04/02/2010 3:51:00 PM

This is what religion breeds: violence and threats of violence (whether physical or emotional). It is time for we, as humans, to let the religious know that they may keep their beliefs, but keep them to themselves. Also, that their personal beliefs will NOT absolve them in crimes against others!!

  • ANTI-PROPAGANDA 04/02/2010 3:49:00 PM

First of all let us be intelligent persons and think about the article, the author, the way it was presented and the content. Let us ask ourselves following questions: 1. Why is a murder that happened in October 2010 in Arizona on the front page in April 2010 issue of RFT here in St. Louis? 2. How is this hit-and-run homicide different than other more vicious murders? 3. Why is there label “Muslim” in the headline? 4. Were those “honor killings” common in ancient Babylon (Iraq) even in pre-islamic era? 5. How is this case different from a case where CONTROLLING FATHER James Harrison shot and killed his 7-year old son and his four daughters because his wife left with another man? Was that not an honor MASS killing? It was even worse since he did not kill his wife who dishonored him but took it out on 5 other persons, young children. Yet this mass murder was not labeled neither “Christian” nor ”honor killing” http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1167691/Controlling-father-kills-son-daughters-wife-leaving-man.html 6. What is the motivation of the writer for this story? To generate comments such these: • NotAnArab 04/01/2010 9:37:46 AM Islam is a cancerous mental disorder. The Americans and the Chinese need to team up to wipe Islam off the face of the earth. Step 1 - Drop a nuke on Mecca during the annual pilgrimage. How hilarious would that be? RTF is allowing hate speech and call to genocide on its page. You are breaking US laws and US constitution. 7. Murder is a murder is a murder is a murder !!! Anyone who manipulates loss of innocent live to spread hatred and anyone who allows it to be published on 3 pages in Goebels propaganda style is just spreading religious and ethnic hatred and wants to turn our country into mindless dictatorship. Don’t you see what the real purpose of the article was?

  • Rest in peace beautiful Noor. 04/02/2010 7:47:00 AM

This is a horrific tragedy that no amount of laws could stop.

  • Outraged Mother! 04/02/2010 7:31:00 AM

To: Tough on Crime Unless I can get political contributions -- You get the "political strategy" Andrew Thomas studied while at Harvard. Maybe he spent time calling on the thousands of Iraqis who live in Maricopa County, by going to their churches before the last campaign? He should have spent more time studying law instead. You bring up a good point about the father who killed his two children and what if this were an illegal immigrant who did this to his child? That's when you'll get your answer.

  • Rachel Mead 04/02/2010 6:12:00 AM

What may be acceptable in the country a person comes from is not always acceptable here in the States. For example: Running your oldest daughter over in a parking lot with your jeep and killing her. That may be an okay thing to do in Iraq, but not in the United States of America. I feel for those who loved Noor Almaleki and I hope that her father rots in jail for the rest of his life. What he did is not okay in this country and should not be okay anywhere.

  • Ben 04/02/2010 3:05:00 AM

Here is the death penalty question for the day. no problem with that! kill them both together!

  • Ben 04/02/2010 3:03:00 AM

What????? He got US citizenship - and may get free from capital punishment???? I agree with Nate: Eye for Eye - is that not what this "RELIGION" prays. Can any Muslim have his own law?? He excepted to become US citizen - and there is only the US law!! For killing in the way he did - chop his body in pieces. And throw him out of this country! Honored killing - what a stupidity - Cold blooded killing of his own blood!!

  • Nate 04/02/2010 1:35:00 AM

If this ignorant jerk didn't want his family Americanized he maybe should have stayed in sand duneland. Take him out to Uncle Johns hog farm--chop his hands and feet off and toss him over the fence......

  • 04/01/2010 2:53:00 PM

"Because He Believed She'd Become Too Americanized" He murdered her for that? The sad, tragic irony.

I'm nominally against the death penalty (because I don't trust the cops or the courts not to make mistakes), but I hope they toast that pig Faleh's ass!

Here is the death penalty question for the day. The father that shot and killed his two young boys today due to the stress of going thru a divorce... will he be given the death penalty? If so then so should this father who obviously was in a power struggle with his daughter. He won the struggle because when a car hits a human very rarely does the human survive.Despite the difficulties this family came to America and became "Americans". This does not give them permission to kill their children if their children embarass them, disobey them, move out. It certainly does not give them the right to murder their children. To not have the death penalty on the table shows Andrew Thomas is evil. There is no justification for this. If this father was an illegalmmigrant we all know what we would be hearing and seeing. This is despicable and the father strategizing is sickening. Andrew Thomas condoning the actions of this father is beyond reason. End this man's political career. Hell run him ver with a car if you are a Muslim apparently the death penalty goes away.
