Arizona wordsmiths honored

In the 1975 Parliament jam "Chocolate City," George Clinton rattles off a shortlist of bergs with majority African-American populations. Unsurprisingly, Phoenix doesn't get a shout out - sadly, the same thing would happen if the P-funk master reimagined the tune in 2010 - but the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center is here to remind us of the local black community's rich history.

A Celebration of Black Authors takes place at the Cultural Center. Award-winning novelist and noted scholar, Dr. Jewell Parker Rhodes, will deliver the keynote address. Celebrating a wide spectrum of African-American writers in Arizona, the evening will also feature Neal Lester, Toni Eubanks, Georgie Goode, Ayanna Thompson, Matthew C. Whitaker, and Katrina Covington Whitmore.
