Radio Daze

PHX's best online station stages a pledge drive of a different sort

As the debate about bringing indie rock to Phoenix's NPR station, KJZZ, continues to bubble, you'll see some mentions of internet-only Radio Phoenix as a possible solution to the problem.

Personally, I think web radio is a pretty poor substitute for the over-the-air kind, but you have to respect what Radio Phoenix has done. The "station" which won a coveted Best of Phoenix award for "Best Online Music Station That Should Be A Radio Station" last year, and has a small but loyal following and does a lot to expose emerging local talent.

Fans of the station need to show up at The Rogue in Scottsdale on Friday: "Radio Phoenix is in dire need of funding support to stay on the internet air waves. So we decided to put together a benefit show to try and cover the $1500 we need. Please, please, please, make room for us in your busy schedule this coming Friday at the Rogue bar and/or tell your friends about this."

The Radio Phoenix Benefit, presumably to raise money to pay for bandwidth and such, will run from 8 p.m. to 10 a.m., with the $10 cover going directly to Radio Phoenix, a 501C3 non profit. William Reed, who used to spin every week at the club, is on board, along with Terra Firma, Walt Richardson, DJ Pablo Gomez and Necronauts.
