War Born

West African music ensemble brings it all together

We’re glad that most of the antagonistic talk between rappers featured in those Beef DVDs and countless web videos seem to be in remission. It's idle chatter to hear some mix-tape, 16-bar spitter talk about going to war when you have a group like Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars escaping real horrors through music.

While seeking safety from the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991-2002), the musicians and songwriters of the All-Stars found each other in the neighboring West African nation of Guinea and discovered comfort in creating music. A documentary film in 2005 brought their story to the world, and 2010 sees the release of their second album, Rise and Shine.

The group’s spirited reggae-tinged African grooves will touch the sky at the brand-new Musical Instrument Museum.
