Killer Pussy fans didn't know or care about homage; they liked the band's pop-flavored naughtiness and LaMode's tight, shiny costumes.
They still do. But LaMode has mixed feelings about the reunion concert.
"I'm a mom," she says, then pauses. "But I guess I'm an old rock star, too. I'm excited about the show, but what am I going to look like singing a song about herpes at my age?" She sighs.
"I worry that my older son will want to come to the show and he'll be screwed up after hearing his mother sing about herpes."
LaMode is a trouper. She's got an updated nurse's outfit ("One that doesn't show cleavage," she insists) and has set aside work on a stage musical that she and Planet are working on to fly into Phoenix to rehearse.
"Killer Pussy rehearsals are quite different," Planet laughs. "Everyone is totally sober, which is nice. And they arrive on time. Our drummer, Vanya, who's 65, has had knee trouble, so we're working with a backup drummer, just in case. We're up there in age, but look at The Rolling Stones!"
"I guess it's better I'm doing this now, at 48, rather than waiting another 10 years," LaMode says. "And at least I haven't gained 300 pounds."
She sighs again. "I like hanging out with the band," she says wistfully. "So I'll be Lucy LaMode for one more night. And who knows? Maybe no one will show up."
We opened for Killer Pussy at the Mason Jar in 86, I was 15 (Franco didn't care) Lucy was so cool she took the time to talk to me and I made her laugh we had a good time for an hour before she went on, she gave me the ep and signed it...so cool...
