Valley celebrates African-American history and heritage

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves in 1863 and the union lived happily ever after.

Not exactly. It took more than two years for the news to reach Texas and the quarter of a million black folks who lived there. One hundred and forty five years later, the Valley of the Sun Juneteenth Celebration parties in the name of freedom.

Commemorating Union General Gordon Granger and his troops' arrival in Galveston, Texas, on June 18, 1865, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and Granger's public announcement the next day, Juneteenth will be a joyful evening filled with plenty of food, music, storytelling, poetry, and fun family activities.
