Whoa. A show featuring a French master painter that’s cool.
Oh, joy. “Cézanne and American Modernism” opens today for a three-month run at one of Phoenix’s largest museums. It will feature (yawn) a Frenchie’s paintings that are all pretty and abstract in a style that’s pre-Picasso and post-Monet.

Wait a minute. Actually, now that we’ve looked at the work, this show is different and not another display of lovely yet predictable works in French Impressionism-ish. The exhibition, which debuted at New Jersey’s Montclair Art Museum in 2009, examines the French master’s unique Post-Impressionist style and how his mad art chops influenced the creative painting and photography movements going on in the States during the early 20th century. Phoenix Art Museum achieves this by presenting more than 80 of Cézanne’s works next to art pieces by American heavy-hitters like Man Ray, Arshile Gorky, and Alfred Stieglitz.
