Lopez is neither a professor of architecture nor a solar physicist. He's the president of Shade Masters, a local company that does nothing but manufacture things — patio awnings and canopies and the like — that create shade for the denizens of a town that desperately needs some.

The guy's a genius.

Robrt, thanks for this great article on shade. I am a huge proponent of it. I particularly enjoyed your reference to the mushrooms at the Beatitudes Campus, where my husband works. They are awesome.

I disagree with you about mid-century modern architects ignoring shade. For example, Haver buildings offered plenty of shade and smart passive solar design. I think we lost a good chunk of our common sense in the eighties and nineties, but more and more, we're seeing well shaded buildings again.

WTF?
WTF?

slow news week?
