This Steven Lemons guy needs to get real. Brewer has done the right thing and painting her as a radical won't help that fool Gaddard. The fact is, whether he or any other pro-illegal wants to admit it, 1070 doesn't allow "Breathing-While-Brown" to be an issue. Getting illegals out of our country and securing the border is one of the FEW things our government is supposed to be doing to protect our country. If your argument is that these are just refugees trying to improve their lives and that they commit no crimes, try dealing with drop houses across the street from where your children play. Try dealing with people stealing your identity and completely wrecking your finances. Try the fact that we put their children through schools and get health care on our dime. Do you know how much my health insurance costs? I'm sure they don't. That's not even the tip of the iceberg. People need to realize that there are really horrible situations everywhere, all over the world, but what we have to do is protect ourselves first, Mexico needs to fix Mexico. It's not my problem. If you want to come here, do it LEGALLY, so you can contribute like the rest.

This book should be required reading for all... the culture of cruelty dates back and explains where Arizona finds itself today - sinking further into a black hole unless they begin thinking about about reform. illegal immigrants cost the state of arizona??? ... you have not notice that Arizona is now a ghost town without the illegals.
But you're also missing the pointf, Illegalls is just an excuse for Brewer to profit from it.
And most importantly, giving too much power to law enforcement is dangerous for the freedom of all american citizsens.
Right now, law enforcement in Arizona is abusing their power not only with the illegals but with the anglosaxons as well. Over there is not the land of the free anymore.

Arizona hold inmates from many other states - something you noticeably left out of your column (Gee, we all wonder why?). What is wrong with the state holding ICE inmates - or are you advocating the building of Federal ICE facilities (or better yet, "camps") to house all of the illegal interlopers? Isn't it the Feds job to prosecute and incarcerate border jumpers? Shouldn't the states assist the Fed in doing that? Shouldn't the Fed pay the state facilities for housing THEIR criminals? This article truly is drive-by journalism at its finest. Focusing on one neo-nazi clown or a few million dollars of detention contracts and ignoring the 2.9 billion dollars that illegal immigrants cost the state of Arizona annually - well, that just smacks of bias, ignorance and an agenda.

This stands out from the previous article:
"The NRA campaign, dubbed "CrimeStrike," was seen by many as a reaction to the Clinton administration's efforts to pass gun control. CrimeStrike set forth the precept that "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and derided any legislator backing gun control as being "soft on crime." With memories of the Willie Horton disaster of the failed 1988 Michael Dukakis presidential campaign still on the minds of lawmakers, this accusation hit a nerve and elicited knee-jerk support of the laws by Democrats.
By 1996, CrimeStrike claimed credit for the passage of three strikes laws in Washington, California, Georgia, Delaware and North Carolina, as well as truth-in-sentencing laws in Arizona, Mississippi and Virginia. Subsequently, prison populations surged.
While the NRA was busy peddling these laws through CrimeStrike, ALEC was pushing its agenda in Pennsylvania with the help of former George H.W. Bush Attorney General William Barr and then-Pennsylvania governor and ALEC member Tom Ridge, a future director of the Department of Homeland Security."

Corporate Con Game
How the private prison industry helped shape Arizona’s anti-immigrant law.
By BEAU HODAI
excerpt:
"On May 29 in Tucson, Ariz., a policeman questions a man in the city’s predominately Latino south side. The Tucson Police Department is gearing up to train its officers on how to implement the state’s new immigration law, S.B. 1070. (Photo by: Scott Olson/Getty Images)
Members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) include Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), Geo Group and 36 Arizona state legislators.
For a detailed schematic of the connections between Arizona politicians and the private prison industry, see this story's sidebar, "Ties That Bind."
Meet the Old War, Same as the New War
The war on undocumented immigrants initiated by Arizona State Sen. Russell Pearce (R-Mesa) is not the first time legislation sponsored by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has filled the nets and bank accounts of the private prison industry.
In the early '90s, the ALEC's Criminal Justice Task Force was co-chaired by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the country's largest private prison company. During those years, the National Rifle Association (NRA), another task force member (and the current task force co-chair), initiated a campaign to introduce two pieces of ALEC-inspired legislation at the state and federal level: the so-called "truth-in-sentencing" and "three-strikes-you're-out" laws. Truth-in-sentencing called for all violent offenders to serve 85 percent of their sentences before being eligible for release. Three strikes called for mandatory life imprisonment for a third felony conviction.
The NRA campaign, dubbed "CrimeStrike," was seen by many as a reaction to the Clinton administration's efforts to pass gun control.
Bush Attorney General William Barr and then-Pennsylvania governor and ALEC member Tom Ridge, a future director of the Department of Homeland Security.
In 1995, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed several pieces of tough-on-crime laws based on ALEC model legislation. ALEC member and State Rep. John Perzel (R-Philadelphia) was the Pennsylvania House majority leader from 1995 to 2003, when he was elected House speaker. In 2005, he joined the board of directors of ALEC member Geo Group, the nation's second largest private prison corporation. Perzel resigned from the corporation's board In November 2009, following an indictment handed down that same month for his alleged role in a scandal. His staffers and other lawmakers were charged with using taxpayer dollars to fund their campaign activities.
In May, Pennsylvania legislators introduced the "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act," making Pennsylvania one of the first states to consider legislation modeled on ALEC's Sanctuary Cities Act...."

Ties That Bind: Arizona Politicians and the Private Prison Industry
A revolving cast of lobbyists and legislators blur the line between public service and corporate profits.
By Beau Hodai June 21, 2010
This story accompanies Corporate Con Game, In These Times' July 2010 cover story.
Excerpt: "Over the past several years private-prison companies Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the Geo Group, through their work as members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and through their ties to the Arizona Legislature and the office of Gov. Jan Brewer, have had ample opportunity--and obvious intent--to ensure the passage of S.B. 1070.
According to Sen. Russell Pearce and Brewer's spokesman Paul Senseman, the S.B. 1070 went through a lengthy edit and review process that took place predominantly within the Arizona Legislature and the offices of the Maricopa County Attorney and Gov. Brewer.
A little over a week after Pearce introduced S.B. 1070 on the floor of the Arizona Senate, CCA enlisted Highground Consulting, one of the most influential lobbying firms in Phoenix, to represent its interests in the state. Lobby disclosure forms filed with the Arizona Secretary of State indicate that Maricopa County also employed Highground during the time of the bill's formation. Highground's owner and principal, Charles "Chuck" Coughlin, is a top advisor and the current campaign manager of Gov. Brewer.
State lobby reports show that Brewer's current spokesman, Senseman, previously worked as CCA's chief lobbyist in Arizona as an employee of Policy Development Group, another influential Phoenix consulting firm. His wife, Kathryn Senseman, is still employed by Policy Development Group and still lobbies the legislature on behalf of CCA.
In other words, in 2005 and 2006, as Arizona legislators--many of them ALEC members--were drafting provisions of what would eventually become the "Breathing While Brown" law, Brewer's director of communications, Senseman, was lobbying them on behalf of CCA..."

You need to go back to school and study some history. Start with "Sunbelt Justice: Arizona and the Transformation of American Punishment" by Mona Lynch. Then read "Jingle Jangle" by Jim Rix, the Ray Krone story of Maricopa County's malicious prosecution of an innocent man who spent almost 20 years in prison for an alleged crime his never committed. Also read "Accidental Felons" by Daniel Horne, who was given the choice of 10 years in prison for a DUI or one year in MCAO jail and labeled as a "violent felon". Where's the fair justice in this? Then read "Backspin" by Alison Hicks who is also producing a movie on how her life was destroyed by Sheriff Arpaio. After reading these few stories, Mr. JournalistMajor08, then make an informed comment. Until then you have NO credibility and you make the Cronkite School look bad.

Tired of Sound-bytes 08/05/2010 3:48:00 AM
I find it interesting that the greater the ignorance of a subject, the louder the voice is about it. According to the Arizona State Legislature's own data, sales tax and income tax revenues in the state have been diving at a 60 degree angle (to the bottom) for over 5 years.
The state legislature "reversed mortgaged" all taxpayer owned assets in 2009 to raise enough money to keep operating (reverse mortgages for the uninformed are a way of converting assets to cash during the last years of life). Maricopa County controls 60 percent of the Arizona Senate and 67 percent of its House of Representatives. That's why Maricopa Cty's Sheriff, Joe Arpaio, and former County Attorney, Andrew Thomas, can terrorize and coerse their will on the legislature. Lunching with powerful State Senator Russell Pierce on a regular basis (author of SB1070) completes the strategy sessions.
The Department of Corrections is the 2nd largest budget item on the state budget. The MCSO is the largest budget item on the Maricopa County budget. The state's GDP is #1 Agriculture and #2 tourism. CCA's interest in creating a prison state in Arizona isn't illegal immigrants, it is the 2 million Americans incarcerated in the other 49 states who are having a difficult time with their budgets as well. Arizona is in transition economically and it isn't because of Latinos crossing the border as they've done for 200 years, it is because tourism is being replaced by more prisons which will provide the jobs for over a million new residents--inmates--and because government funding to states is based on census counts. The census counts inmates in the state of residence, not their state of origin and the for-profits routinely ship their human cattle across state lines to fill beds. CCA is traded on the NYSE by the way, it is into more than prisons and is expanding its product lines into new areas of human predation - for profit - all the time.

Not sure, what your post is implying? I know that Pearce could not have passed his bigoted law through, the States house/senate.
He was opposed by the Az Chamber, who uses this labor force, he is trying to target? NO?
The only, way they were going to "buy" off on the passage, was to to water some of the points, that had to due with the "business" portion....., as well as make sure the "FOR PROFIT" bushiness owners (CCA), got compensated for housing the detainees, ..... furthermore, to be paid for courtesy the US Gov...?
Imagine that??

"JournalistMajor08" needs to pull his head out of his ass, which probably why he scored a job blogging anonymously for Chuck Coughlin. Check CCA's own Web site http://www.correctionscorp.com/facilities/?state=AZ, they have facilities in Arizona and ICE is one of CCA's biggest cash cows. Ask any immigration lawyer. They're always going to CCA to see clients.
As for Senseman working with the Policy Development Group, which lobbies for CCA, that's been documented up the yinyang. Check this article from the AZ Capitol Times:
http://www.pscoa.org/privatization/december%2003%20privatization/29.htm
As for his wife working for PDA, look at PDA's website for a pic of her:
http://www.policydevelopmentgroup.com/index-5.html
K. Senseman is listed as a lobbyist working for CCA:
http://www.azlobbyists.com/client.cfm?id=1305
As for Coughlin, he admits his firm was taking CCA money while he was advising Brewer on 1070.
J.Major says, "This article is so blatantly false, it's slander." But he offers no proof, just his own jerkoff statements. So is In These Times and CBS 5 wrong too? Lemons piece is solid, and he let Coughlin hang himself with his own lies. The $11 mil thing is verified by the fucking marshal himself. Yadda-yadda-yadda...
I think J.Major needs to head back to J.school...

Who are the real predators? 08/02/2010 4:15:00 AM
Stephen, Great public service in daring to report the reality of "illegal immigration" which many informed people know it's all about "control" and $$$'s. They are building their empire at the expense of vulnerable people.
"Such early contributions are limited to $140 per person. But if that seems like chump change, consider that CCA also contributed a whopping $10,000 to the campaign for Prop 100, the state sales-tax initiative, the success of which was considered key to Brewer's bid to be more than an "accidental" governor.
The proposition was approved overwhelmingly by voters in May.
What's the big deal with the CCA contributions? CCA operates six prisons in Arizona, three of which house detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement."

Stormaz100 08/01/2010 8:14:00 PM
Proposition 200 passed by the voters in 2004 requires everyone applying for state funded benefits to provide proof of citizenship to receive those benefits. Any state employee that doesn't report to all state agencies the information of those who cannot provide the required documentation is guilty of a class two misdemeanor punishable by up to four months in jail and/or a $750 fine.
If, as you claim, all these illegals are actually receiving welfare from the Arizona taxpayers, then why isn't the state following the law? Why aren't state employees being cited and prosecuted for their crimes?
And, by the way, mind giving us some sources of where you got your information? I see lots of wildly inaccurate claims, but never any sources for it.

Teddy, you poor useless image of a man. I guess you haven't seen once beautiful Paradise Valley neighborhoods reduced to Mexican slums. You haven't seen relatives and friends get into auto accidents caused by uninsured illegal drivers with no license, leaving them to pay the auto repair bills and passing on higher insurance rates. What about the illegal who can't find work, what does he do to survive? Perhaps he starts selling drugs to our children or worse - robbery. I'll bet you haven't seen the billion dollar impact of welfare anchor babies (and having them in our emergency rooms free of charge). Young illegal girls, 16 years or so, already pregnant and pushing a stroller walking into a WIC/DES office (with their mothers who also already claim welfare) to get their free ride. No, I don't think you see anything clearly at all. But we "Americans" here in Arizona who pay our taxes and follow the law, see it all crystal clear! Just rebury your head in the sand.

In later years the prison system has become more profitable than anything else for our corrupt Arizona officials. Is CCA the new name for GEO Prisons?? Last year in Pensylvania 2 judges were convicted of taking brives from Geo prison systems to convict more juveniles and send them to their prison. They were able to exonerate thousands of these poor victims. It's the same case here in Arizona. Half of the prison population doesn't belong there, they were put there simply because that's how our corrupt officials make their money.

Misdemeanor crime is not generally enforced at the point of a gun, unless you are Joe Arpiao, the meanest dimwit in America! The goofball sheriff is costing his county millions, over 50 so far in judgments alone and the crime rate is rising exponentially in the county while it has fallen in every other Arizona county. Something is very wrong in Maricopa County, Arizona and the problem delusionally calls itself America's toughest sheriff!

Arizona's race to the bottom.. 07/31/2010 2:54:00 AM
This is the most important story of the year that "illegal immigration" has masked -- the mass incarceration of Arizona's people under draconian mandatory minimum sentencing, three-strikes laws and truth in sentencing with no end in sight. Now the public will know why Arizona is racing to the bottom in it's quest for $$$'s from taxpayers and the Federal government's $$$'s for "head-counts" and "violent criminals". Arizona doesn't get money for Non-violent criminals. Someone investigate the Arizona Prison Report 2009 written by Fischer, who worked for ADC, reclassified inmates to suit the figures they wanted to get 95% of Arizona's inmates are "violent"!! We all know better. Thomas proud of his 200,000 convictions?? What is that costing taxpayers? How many are innocent? That is the question NO ONE wants to answer or acknowledge. If you think it can't happen to you, think again.

He sounds biased throughout the whole piece, and never lists any credible sources! Anybody in there basement could have written this garbage.

The article may be enlightening as to some of the alliances created by SB1070 but does nothing in desuading me of its enforcement. This is like arguing if it is OK for a Navy SEAL member to hit a target in the mouth to subdue him for arrest (as opposed to killing him). It is war and there are abnormal acts of conduct in abnormally hostile enviroments. SB1070 is an attempt to maintain US sovereignty due to dereliction of duty on the federal governments part. US sovereignty is the foundation for maintaining the US Constitution.
Immigration MUST be a controlled process so as to indoctrinate the immigrants into our culture (Know the US Constitution, Know the language of the host country, Know that the economic model of capitalism promotes self-reliance and individual independence) so that full assimilation may occurr. This promotes harmony by homogenizing the values of the citizenry.
Axiom: Your home is a soveriegn place that you control. You have a process that screens people that you allow into your home so as to maintain harmony. Without home sovereignty any person can walk into your home and do what they want and take what they want from your home. Without home sovereignty you would loose control and there would be no harmony between you and the violators of your home sovereignty. You would cease to have a home.

Because the people need to know the facts, not the lies that are put out by certain people. If it hurts to read facts, just stick to fiction.

Why the heck is Yahoo News suddenly posting this liberal crap rag paper on my opening page? The credibility of these articles are on par with The weekly World News of The Globe....you know, Elvis Presley's ghost has been seen at Michael Jackson's grave....

I would suggest that an author verify his information before posting an article. Posting hyperbole as fact only makes one look like a moron

The Az Chamber of Commerce, are the ones, who allowed this to happen in the first place!!
They along with Pearce's "secret handshake" deal, is why this was allowed to pass the legislature.
The profiteers, will be the ones who own the "for profit" prisons!!
