Oud There

Iraqi-American artist merges ancient with future

John Coltrane’s ensemble helped to introduce the oud to Western ears, folks like Don Cherry kept oud listeners intrigued, and cats like Rahim AlHaj are keeping the Arabic stringed instrument in America’s consciousness. The Baghdad, Iraq-born musician and composer, who now resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, creates emotionally layered and sonically nuanced music on the antediluvian ax that was supposedly invented during Biblical times.

AlHaj will showcase tunes from his Grammy-nominated Ancient Sounds (2009) album as well as other numbers.
