Pinter Surprise

Harold, We Hardly Know Ye

Harold Pinter is sneaky. The playwright’s stories start out canted, and slowly slide from seemingly mundane settings and people -- strangers at a party; former college classmates reminiscing in a living room -- into stories that look familiar but feel (usually all at once) a little off. The strangers at the party might be gangsters; the former classmates might not actually know one another.

Those of us who don’t know Pinter as the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature who has racked up more than three dozen celebrated stage plays and screenplays might recognize him as The Man on the TV in the 2007 Michael Caine and Jude Law movie Sleuth (the screenplay for which Pinter wrote).

Enjoy Pinter: A Perspective, a free discussion of his life and career, staged readings of scenes from some of his plays, and a moderated chat led by ASU’s Dr. Barbara Acker.
