Joan Waters is inspired by Phoenix, her home for more than 20 years. Originally from England, she studied African art at the University of Maryland, and lived in that state for many years. But its the klieg-like lighting and the vast openness of the desert that informed Waters early, abstract acrylic paintings; later, she took to steel sculpture, and now uses both media to explore her own perspectives on the world. Without depicting nature in a traditional way, Waters captures the forms and energies found in the habitats of different climes.
Her new show, titled 20/20 - New Sculpture and Painting, celebrates the very different landscapes of Arizona and Maryland, and acknowledges the 20 years shes lived in each of those states.
