First Laughs

Immigration protests. Foreclosures. Jan Brewer. Phoenix has had a rough year. But according to local spoken word performer Mr. Frip, at least one good thing has come out of the turmoil: a crapload of laughter.

"I have noticed that comedy is becoming more popular and more necessary," he tells New Times. "I feel it's a reaction to the economy, politics, and all the other fodder that ticks us off, but [we] just have to laugh at to cope."

Catch Frip in the inaugural First Friday Night Live show at The Firehouse. It’s basically a Phoenix-based version of SNL, with Frip and fourteen other cast members acting out sketch comedy scenes penned by local writers. Artist Pete Petrisko (who was accidentally reported dead by AZCentral when he moved to Tucson earlier this year) will host the first installment. That’s what happens when you try to leave us, Pete.
